Help me find the name of a song

This has been winding me up for a few days now. I’m pretty sure I own the album with this song on it, and I can remember parts of the lyrics to the song, but can’t remember the song title or artist name.

The song has a narrated part to it which talks about a young man who dies in a car crash, he was apparently racing another vehicle, and he was on his way home from his father’s store where he worked.

The song itself was about the tragedy of dieing young if I remember correctly.
I keep thinking it was a Flaming Lips song, but can’t find it on any lyrics list.

Last Kiss

It’s the guy’s girlfriend who dies in Last Kiss, not the guy.

This is driving me crazy. I’m sure I have an album somewhere with the track I’m lookig for on it.

I should say the information about the crash is given in a female voice (iirc) whilst the singer ia male. And the female voice sounds like a Police officer discribing the incident.

Tell Laura I Love Her?

Sorry to be such a wet blanket (I got nothin’ wrt what the song is), but in Tell Laura I Love Her, the kid is entered in a stock car race. In the OP’s song, it appears that the race is one of those impromptu street races that so often end up in tragedy and/or tragedy-related songs.

That said, every time I hear the music to TLILH, I find myself singing the line, “And no go out wit’ Mits Funai.”

And before anybody says “Teen Angel”, NO! it doesn’t meet Bippy’s description!

This page has a list of car-crash songs, plus comments that refer to other vehicular-tragedy tunes. Any help?

This is a Flaming Lips crash song, but it doesn’t seem to fit your description. I just thought posting it would maybe jog your memory elsewhere:

Yeah, I figured it was too good to be true, but for some reason the song just flew into my brain and I had to regurgitate it before I hurt myself

Thanks guys, it wasn’t on Sternvogel’s list (great list btw). I’ll have to check through all my cds in hope of an answer.

Thirty Thousand Pounds of Bananas, by Harry Chapin?

I got nowhere with many google search attempts. I’m starting to think I missheard a key part of the lyrics, or an going mad.
The second possibility seems most likely to me. I’ll bounce this if I ever find the damn song. Thanks for trying to help guys.
