I’ve been wondering for a long time about two stories that were in my elementary school readers. They were both excerpts, and I assume the beginning of books, or at least longer short stories.
One involved humans awaking to find their house was just a little bit off. Eventually, they find out they have been taken captive by some giant, antlike aliens for some sort of zoo. And then the reader stops.
The other involves a group of humans leaving Earth because it’s almost to the point where the sun (and their advanced technology) cannot sustain life. They don’t really have much technology left (placing them at just beyond our capabilities). They use a beatup old spaceship to leave, and they arrive on a planet that has very little dust in the atmosphere, rains differently, and trees are made of nearly indestructible fibers, but can be easily split along the grain from top to bottom.
I’ve just always wondered about the endings of these two stories. In fact, that seemed to be the point of the readers, but I don’t remember them telling us what books we could use to find the rest of the story. Any clue?
