Help me guess why my mailbox flag is raised..again..and again..

Four or five times over the last few weeks, I’ve noticed that the flag on my mailbox has been raised…you know, normally indicating that there is outgoing mail for the mail carrier to pick up.

I live alone. I’m on a cul-de-sac, and my mailbox is at the road at the end of my driveway.

Today, I got home from work early, and got my mail. I went out for an hour or so running errands…when I came back, the flag was up. I checked the mailbox just for fun - nothing new in it. I put the flag back down.

Any theories? Neighborhood kid that thinks it is funny? Door to door salesman trying to mark the house as not being hit?
Thanks…

Have you looked to see if any other flags on the street are raised as well?

There are roughly 10 houses on my cul-de-sac. I can see all the mailboxes from
my driveway. In fact, the mailboxes are in pairs - one common post between two driveways, with the mailboxes for the two houses hanging off either side.

The others are not raised…so whoever is doing it seems to be targeting my mailbox.

Is the flag loosely attached and has it been windy where you are?

I like the way you’re thinking…outside the box… But no and no.
It’s screwed on tight enough that I could leave the flag at any angle I want between horizontal and vertical.

And it’s between the two mailboxes. I think the mailbox would fall down before the flag would move due to wind.

Maybe your immediate post-box neighbor thinks it’s his own flag he’s raising and is HIGHLY annoyed at you for putting it down!

My neighbor and I have both lived here for over 10 years, and this has only been going on for a few weeks.

She does, however, have her grandkids staying with her right now…so there’s a possibility there. I’ll ask her next time I see her, just in case.
BTW, my real concern is that it annoys the mail carrier…if I don’t notice it before she comes, she may think I’m trying to screw with her.

Do you have a large amount of helium-filled balloons tied to the flag?

I was wondering where I put those balloons! I had to store them somewhere after taking that flight…

My vote is for neighborhood kids. Sounds like something I would have done when I was little and annoying.

I vote kids, also.

Damn kids - get offa D/a’s lawn!

Is there a fat kid you’ve recently seen jogging? Maybe his parents live straight out from you down the street, and this is the only way he can prove he did his daily required jog.

My cousin and I once went around her entire neighborhood (which is HUGE) and pulled up the flags on every single mail box. I could also see a kid doing something like this just to piss off a neighbor.

Do you have known brats living near you, that would pull this kind of thing?

No known brats…at least, not to me. My cul-de-sac is really peaceful. People can leave their garage doors open all day and not have anything stolen, for instance.

I am on the farthest part of the cul-de-sac from the main street…so maybe **Munch’s **theory holds some…weight.

I’m actually voting for the kids too…not sure which ones. I wonder if I should just leave it up when they do it and see if they get tired of the game. I also wonder if I should have put a poll on this thread, so we could have really voted!

I’m a bit tired…can someone make a Scooby Doo joke about meddling kids for me? Thanks…

Unless you’ve found a way to stop the daily load of junk mail, the mailman is stopping at your mailbox every day anyway. What’s the difference if the flag is raised or not? The mailbox doesn’t even belong to you anyway. If anyone had a problem with the flag it would be the government.

I get mail about four days a week. I don’t know what happens to the junk mail the other two delivery days…maybe the same kids are taking it.

Update! Because I know you all REALLY care…
I ran into my neighbor at lunch time. As it happened, both of our mailbox flags were up.
I asked her about it…she looked over, sighed, and complained that her kids and grandkids are staying with her while waiting to close on a house, and the grandkids do stuff like that.

So I think we have an answer…
