Help me hit 100 installed games

I recently purchased a 1.5 Terabyte HD and have gone crazy installing all my old games on it. After awhile I realized I was getting close to 100 games (not counting old emulated games which would be well over 100). I have fallen short so I was thinking of posting a list of installed games and having the dope recommend to me any good games I’ve missed.

Needless to say I’d prefer cheap older games I can pick up at a discount but don’t let that stop you from recommending some newer games. I’ve also put a short take on my feelings towards each game to give you an idea of my tastes. I’ve also arbitrarily assigned them categories when I was creating shortcuts so I’ve included that in my list. Don’t worry if the categories don’t make sense.

Role Playing:

  1. Arcanum, Eh the combat is pretty lame and I couldn’t quite get into this. I swear I’ll beat it someday.
  2. Baldur’s Gate II + Throne of Bhaal all time classic.
  3. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic fairly fun nothing special
  4. Deus Ex classic. Who doesn’t like this game?
  5. Deus Ex II taking a classic and screwing it up.
  6. Diablo II + Xpack solid game. Worth playing through a time or two but people who still play it obsessively is baffling to me.
  7. Dungeon Siege + Legends of Aranna fun game. A bit limited and gets boring near the end.
  8. Fable the Lost Chapters a little too cutesy for me it was fun to play through once though.
  9. **Fallout 2 **another classic. I can’t stand the combat system anymore though.
  10. Fallout 3 + extra content great game. Strangely though I loved playing through the first time I’ve never really wanted to start over which is rare for me if I care enough to play through a game once I usually do another playthrough.
  11. Gothic 3 always meant to return to this and beat it. Clunky and buggy
  12. **Mass Effect **good game that gets better the more I play it.
  13. Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition Never gotten past chapter 2. I hate the henchmen system.
  14. Neverwinter Nights II + Xpacks great game made perfect by Mask of the Betrayer…the second Xpack Storm of the whatever was terrible though.
  15. Oblivion + Shivering Isles Fun game but wears out its welcome.
  16. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic awesome game.
  17. KotOR II Never could get into this game. Just seemed buggy and poorly focused. I’d rather replay the first.
  18. System Shock 2 great game great atmosphere
  19. The Witcher why can’t I love this game? I got about ½ through and just gave up. I mean to go back but I just can’t get interested.
  20. **Torment **another game I just can’t get into. I get to out of the beginning areas and just give up. I know if I gave it a chance I’d love the story but I just feel lost and bored.
  21. Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines Fun game but doesn’t really grab me.
  22. World of Warcraft I go hot and cold on this game. I’ll play it to death for a month then forget about it for 3 months. Right now I’ve just let my account lapse.

Causal:
23. Braid a game that makes me feel stupid.
24. Defense Grid wonderful game. Why isn’t there more tower defense games already?
25. The Longest Journey decent adventure game. Gets a bit tedious walking across 6 screens to get a puzzle piece so I can walk back 7 screens to solve it.
26. Dreamfall The Longest Journey see above only with annoying combat included.
27. Lemmings Revolution. Oh cool a remake of lemmings? Oh wait this sucks.
28. **Majestic Chess **a game that shows me I should not be allowed to play chess.
29. Plants Vs Zombies eh a cute game but once you understand how it works it’s too easy.
30. Sanitarium great adventure game with terrible voice acting.
31. Secret of Monkey Island just got it haven’t played it.
32. Sid Meier’s Pirates a remake of the first game I’d ever played on PC (we’re talking old floppy disks) alright game. Never ‘beat’ it.
33. The Sims 3 mostly my wife’s game. I enjoy maxing out a character or household but no long term interest.
34. **Trine **haven’t gotten very far. Don’t know.
35. Viva Pinata another game for the wife. I got a surprising amount of playtime out of it though.

First Person Shooter
36. **Aliens Vs Predator 2 + Primal Hunt **great games. I think they should have been more popular.
37. Bioshock sometimes great sometimes too easy/boring.
38. **Cliver Barker’s Undying **another game that should have been more popular. Jammed! Stuck! Damnit….
39. **Crysis **eh should have been fun but somehow managed not to be.
40. **Doom 3 + Resurrection of Evil **funner then people say (I think they were expecting it to redefine FPS’s or something) instead it’s just ok.
41. F.E.A.R. good game.
42. **F.E.A.R. 2 **Project Origin so far so good. Not very far into it.
43. Far Cry 2 I keep trying to like this game. I spend too much time finding diamonds though and getting bored. My own fault I suppose.
44. Ghost Recon + Desert Siege I loved this game. I love being a sniper and clearing a whole map by myself (or using other chars just for mission objectives).
45. Half Life + Opposing Force + Blue Shift, HL good Opposing Force Good Blue Shift I haven’t played.
46. HL 2 + Ep1 +Ep2 HL2 bores me about halfway through but Ep1 and Ep2 were much better paced. I love these games aside from vehicles.
47. Portal. Great game so great in fact my wife even played through it (she stays away from FPS’s otherwise) and no no cake jokes.
48. **Prey **eh. Crappy game.
49. Swat 4 I’m too much of a perfectionist for this game. I’m not happy unless I get 100% on each level so I get frustrated once the missions start getting too hard for takedowns.
50. Thief Deadly Shadows….why don’t I like this game? I love sneaking I love striking from the shadows. Yet I’ve never gotten more then ½ through this game.
51. **Wolfenstein **just got it. Haven’t played it.

Strategy
52. **Dungeon Keeper II **still a fun game.
53. Empire Total War Love it. Love the whole total war series. I’m thinking of picking up a few of the old titles which I seem to have lost.
54. Galatic Civilizations II fun games. The AI kicks my ass though.
55. **Ghost Master **ok awkward controls and obtuse puzzles but this is still a fun game under it all.
56. Homeworld 2. Love this series.
57. Majesty + Northern Expansion it’s a shame nobody else knows this series. It should have been a cult classic at least.
58. Overlord II loved the first. This one is only ok.
59. Pharaoh eh fun for a few levels but just gets too complicated later on.
60. **Medieval Total War + Viking Invasion **my favorite out of the Total War series. VI for short fun games the full game for long campaigns.
61. Sid Meier’s Civ 4 + Warlords + Beyond the Sword. I think deep down I still secretly want to play Civ 2 or Alpha Centuri but these games will do.
62. Sins of a Solar Empire + Entrenchment great game made even better by Entrenchment.
63. **Space Colony **cute game with some flaws.
64. Star Craft + Brood War. Surprising how fun these games still are.
65. Star Topia another gem nobody seems to play. I think this is because it would have been an excellent bargain bin game that came out at full price.
66. **Supreme Commander eh this game just doesn’t do it for me.
67. T
he Movies + Stunts and Effects **pretty fun but just doesn’t seem to be worth replaying.
68. Tropico fun game didn’t really capture my interest.
69. Tropico II wife picked this up randomly from a bargain shelf. Haven’t played it.
70. Warcraft III + Frozen Throne. What can I say? I love Blizzard.

Third Person
71. Assassin’s Creed why is this game so loved? After being chased down and killed for riding my horse too fast I quit (no that wasn’t my only problem with it)
72. Ghost Busters hate the checkpoint system and there’s some boring boss fights but still fun for nostalgia’s sake.
73. Hitman Blood Money…do I have Silent Assassin rating on every level on the hardest setting? You know I think I do.
74. Jade Empire fun game in a new setting.
75. Max Payne 2 Solid game. Gets a bit tedious about 3/4ths of the way through.
76. **Prototype **seems fun. I haven’t gotten very far yet.
77. Spore mediocre game where I was expecting greatness.
78. X3 Terran Conflict you just have to play this game to realize the scale you can reach in this game. It’s awe inspiring….(though buggy as hell)
79. **Saints Row 2 **strange game. Sometimes funny and weird other times childish and stupid other times it tries to be gritty and dark. I’d say I ended up liking it more then hating it though.
80. **Titan Quest **Diablo II knockoff only less fun.
81. GTA San Andreas eh I don’t see why this game is so beloved.

Also if anyone is interested in chatting/commenting on any of these games I’d enjoy hearing about it. Especially if it inspires me to finish one on my to do list or rediscover one of the games I haven’t touched in awhile.

One frustrating thing is I seem to be missing several games. Like I know I have Freelancer but can’t seem to find it. Was it lost in the move to England? Is it somewhere in the storage room? I know I can pick it up cheap but seems a waste.

Free turn based strategy fantasy game: Battle for Wesnoth really fun and varied single player campaigns + a healthy online community (well last i checked anyways) make this one the best turn based strategy games out there.

Cheap medieval combat game: Mount and Blade medieval combat + sid meiers pirates! style game, i’ve been playing this game ever since early beta years ago and as fun as it was back then its gotten much better over the years.

I can’t say enough about either of those games, specially mount and blade. I also notice you don’t have any of the Heroes of Might and Magic games, i strongly recommend you play 3 or 5. In your first person shooters list you have Portal and HL2 but not Team Fortress 2, did you not buy the orange box for the other two?

Sounds good I’ll look into it.

I tried a free beta of that awhile ago. I was bewildered by the starting stats. Maybe if I read some guides for it.

I’ve always meant to give the Heroes series a try. I’ll see what I can find.

I have Team Fortress but it’s too frantic for me.

Don’t worry too much about starting stats, for the most part they do exactly what you would expect.

Oh found my Psychonauts disks.

  1. Psychonauts I keep hearing about all the cool later levels and I always seem to give up before I reach them. Maybe if I worried less about having to collect everything all the time and just played the damn thing.

  2. Battle for Wesnoth per DigitalC We’ll see if this stays installed.

Saw you said you have Secrets of Monkey Island, if you like that, then you HAVE to get pretty much all the other Lucasarts classics, Monkey Island 2, DOTT, Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis, Full Throttle, The Dig, and possible even Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Zak Mckraken.

Also, I would recommend Star Control II (can download the free remake, The Urquan Masters), and some stratagy games like X-COM: UFO Defense, Masters of Magic, and Masters of Orion II (however Galactic Civilizations II is the spiritual successor and IMHO a better game).

Are you not counting the Entertainment Pack games like Minesweeper and FreeCell? Or did you somehow come to not have those installed on your computer?

I have it but I haven’t played it yet. I’ve heard some good things about Indiana Jones but I don’t even know what DOTT is or Zak McKraken.

I’ll check out Star Control. I remember playing X-Com on DOS box before and couldn’t really get into it but I think the version I had was buggy.

Well it’s really about how many games I’ve got on my new drive but I wouldn’t count those little games anyway.

Sorry, DOTT Stands for Day Of The Tentacle, which is a sequel to Manic Mansion, however you don’t have to play that game to enjoy Day of the Tentacle. Zak McKraken is the 2nd adventure game LucasArts (then LucasFilm Games) came out with, after Maniac Mansion. It is a cool game, but it is somewhat dated, but worth playing at least once.

Basically, all of the old LucasArts adventure games are worth playing, and they have even stood the test of time. There is actually a special emulator to play the games on any platform, so you don’t have to figure out something like DOS Box, download SCUMMvm. You still need the games, but this will run them perfectly.

There were actually a few major bugs in X-Com, but the game is worth it anyhow. There is a program called xcomutil that you can download, and will fix the bugs, along with making the game a better game.

Oh, and definably download Star Control, it is probably my most faverite game of all time. The Ur-Quan Masters remake actually uses the original source code, and was helped by the original developers. Definably worth playing.

Ahh, this takes me back to a conversation from…mmmm, 1992 or so?

“You spent nearly two thousand dollars on a hard dive? Why in the hell would you get a two gigabyte hard drive anyway? You’d have to install every game you’ve ever bought just to come close to filling it!”

You need:
Fallout + Fallout Restoration Project third-party mod
Warcraft 2 - just for the unit acknowledgement sounds (“done building ship!”)
Civilization II
Tachyon: The Fringe - just for Bruce Campbell’s voice acting
Star Wars: Battlefront/Battlefront II
Overlord
Doom or one of its sequels/updates (just 'cause it’s a classic!)
Lemmings 2: The Tribes
Icewind Dale II - more hack-and-slash than BG, less chatting with townsfolk, but still fun
If Torment =/= Planescape Torment, then you need that.

Agreed on Civ II and Warcraft II (though last time I tried getting Warcraft II working I had all sorts of problems). Doom 3 is already on the list.

I didn’t really enjoy Icewind Dale. Combat was the weakest part of Baldur’s Gate II and Icewind was just BGII minus the story.

Torment does indeed mean Planescape: Torment.

I didn’t notice any Call Of Duty games on your FPS list. You need COD2 (which is still great and super cheap) and Call Of Duty 4 (which is awesome).

Hit a bargain bin today.
84. Heroes of Might and Magic V
85. Grim Fandango this appears bugged. Big coloured lines through the screen when it starts. Tried using Win95 compatibility mode and no luck.
86. Painkiller The only thing I know about this game is that you get a gun that shoots shurikens and lightening.
87. Beyond Good and Evil I’ve seen good reviews of this game so I thought I’d give it a shot.

oh forgot to add
88. Disciples 2 another game from the bargain bin. I remember playing it and thinking it was ok. I guess we’ll see
89. Penny Arcade no I’m not going to type out the full title. I got eps 1 and 2. I’ve always wanted to check this game out just never got around to it. Seems cute and fun so far.

I reccomend Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. To me it is more fun and has a better story line than Andreas does. Gameplay is near identical to Andreas but just seems like a better game to me. I’ve played Vice City for years and will bust it out every now and again just for some random carnage. I played Andreas for about a month and stopped and I haven’t touched it since.

Have you considered trying the Myst series of games? Very entertaining if you’re into puzzles, and the quality gets better with every game. They’re mostly point and click, with the exception of Uru. Ugh, Uru. But judging by your list of installed games, you might actually like Uru.

Chiming in to suggest Bungie’s Myth and Myth II: Soulblighter which were astounding games in their time, using a full 3-D engine complete with physics(!). These days the gameplay is excruciatingly slow but the graphics have held up surprisingly well and they use neat hand-drawn animated cutscenes to advance an entertaining storyline. Should be dirty cheap now, too.

You could always just hit up the indie freeware scene to pad out your list for free. I don’t remember if Cave Story actually has an installer, but it should be on every PC.

Well I just don’t want to fill it with random anything. I even have a couple of games I haven’t re-installed because I know I’ll never play them again and they’re just junk.

I probably won’t get to a game store until Sat so I’ll have to wait to see if I can pick up a Myst game or two. I’m sure I could find it online but I’d like to find it cheap as possible.
