Help me ID this book (Desert survival, slingshot)

I’m trying to help a friend identify a book he read when he was a kid. He said he remembers a guy getting left in the desert by some guys in a jeep. He made a slingshot to survive with and he was trying to get to the jeep for some reason.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I don’t recognize the story, but the place to go to find a remembered children’s book is Loganberry Books. Searches on “slingshot” and “jeep” didn’t turn up any likely possibilities, but maybe you or your friend could try some other keywords, or read through the solved mysteries. For $2.00 you can even submit your own mystery to see if anyone can solve it.

Deathwatch by Robb White. Made into a made-for-TV movie directed by Spielberg, but I cannot remember the movie’s title Savages, possibly, but I don’t feel like looking it up.

I knew I could count on you guys. This guy seemed to have spontaneously remembered the book and I could almost see the sweat beading on his forehead as he panicked while trying to recall the details of it.
