Help me identify and find this old-schoolie computer game

It’s been haunting me for years.

A friend of mine, when I was a small child, had a game on her computer called (IIRC) “Castle”. I only very vaguely remember it, but as I recall, it was an Angband type game, except that the castle was pre-set every time, and it was, of course, exploring this castle. It was a DOS game.

This couldn’t have been much more recent than 1986 or so, probably earlier.

This was definitely a game that they purchased or came with the computer - they did not have a modem.

It played some sort of opening tune when you started the application – I remember that from waking my friend’s parents at about 6am. Ooops.

Anyone remember this game or know if there are any versions that would run on a modern system? I loved this game… I had dreams about this game!

Is it this one?

Wow, thanks TMINC. I’ve beensearching for that game for ages. The castle.exe version won’t run on my XP box but the wombat version does.

Was that the one with “the walls are made of gray stone”? I have memories of it, too.

And the crucifix you needed to use to repel the vampire was represented by a lower-case t.

Ahhhhhhhh! I used to play that game when I was in kindergarten! Defeating the monsters gave me a real adrenalin rush

Yes!! That’s it!

Anyone had luck getting it to run in Windows XP? It doesn’t seem to be able to find its own files (at least on my system), on both versions.

Right click, properties, compatability, choose an older operating system, apply. I have some old games I still enjoy and it was the only way I can get them to work.

Also if you open the other zipped folder (can’t remember what it’s called now, but it had the word “heat” in it, I believe) and run the Wombat.exe, that works in XP.

Glad to have been of service

Wow! I remember playing this game as well on the old 8088 based XTs in high school… I suppose a lot of people played it.

-k

Got it working now. Will changing to an older operating system slow it down? The ogre hurts me, punching me repeatedly until death.

And there I was?.sitting back reading the thread and deciding in the end to click on the link given by TellMeI’mNotCrazy to see what you were all talking about when I spot the first images and WOW, it?s 1986 again and I?m playing on my C16. There goes this week?s deadline?it?s time for some Castle Adventure !
