Help me Identify The Fastener I Needs

Hi All

I need a specific type of fastener, and I feel as though i have seen its sort before. But not knowing what it would be called, I am having no luck locating it. That said, I could approach another way. So as usual, I am here looking for some help.

The Problem:
The new house is in an urban environment, and the only way to get equipment, landscaping materials, etc. into the back yard is to drive in through the nieghbor’s driveway. Fortunately, he’s a decent fellow. However, the yard is fenced in. So it also means removing a fence panel (8 foot picket sections, screwed directly to 4x4 posts).

Rather than removing and re-screwing the panels, which would take a toll over time (there’s a lot of work to do back there), I would like to hang two sections with a bolt through the sections and a nut on the end of that. To do this, I would like some kind of double-ended fastener, presumably something like a lag screw on the post half and a threaded rod on the panel side. I’d drill a hole through the panel and hang it on the threaded rod (with a nut & washer, of course).

I feel like I have seen one of these before, but I have no idea what it would be called. It would have to be on the larger side for the application, maybe 1/4" with at least 1.5" on the post/lag side and 3" on the fence panel side

Thoughts? Other approaches?

That should get you started.

You can certainly do as you thought with this kind of nut and bolt approach. It works and there’s no issue with it. You did ask for other approaches though so I’ll tell you how I solved more or less the same problem.

I had a section of prefab fencing that needed to be periodically removed to allow access. Looking through my local hardware store for inspiration, I found some heavy duty hinges with removable hinge pins. I ended up buying four of these and lag bolting two of these on each side of the panel. When I want to open it, I simply pull two pins and the panel swings open like a gate.

No matter what plan you decide to use, make sure you get stainless steel hardware unless you like dealing with rust.

Shunpiker & enipla, thanks a lot for those finds. Definitely what I was looking for, and a few other intriguing possibilities as well.

Alpha Twit, the hinges is also a good idea. I am indeed open to other solutions. The main thing was that if I am removing and re-inserting a 3 inch deck screw 5 times a year, eventually it will take a toll on the fence post. So I’d like a more engineered solution.

When I read your description, a carriage bolt popped in my head, then again it’s early and I am not fully awake.

I was also thinking carriage bolts for some reason.

I’d recommend adding some cable and turnbuckles to the diagonals to help things stay square and supported if it’s a single fence panel.
