I read a quote a few years back and thought it was really interesting. It was on a webpage that just lists quotes, and I’ve never been able to find the exact origin of the quote. I’ve searched the internet but I just find links to more pages filled with quotes that do not identify the document that the quote is from. If anyone could give me any assistence on identifying the author of this quote and the document it resides in, I would be very grateful.
“Cannibalism is a radical yet realistic solution to the problem of overpopulation.”
A quick google search on ‘cannibalism radical overpopulation’ found this:
Cannibalism is a “radical but realistic solution to the problem of
overpopulation.” Lyall Watson, The Financial Times, 15 July 1995
I haven’t read Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” in many years, but the Financial Times writer may well have been alluding to it.
In the 18th century, Swift wrote a satirical economic treatise called “A Modest Proposal,” in which he suggested that poverty, hunger and overpopulation could be eliminated in Ireland if the Irish would only eat their children.
I loved that story! But for some reason, I was the only person that laughed at it, and everyone gave me this weird look…
Hahahaha. Thanks for the info. I’m going to see if I can find that and read it.
