Help me identify this 1970's (?) horror film or show

Accurate or not, here’s what I remember:

A family is staying in this big old house in the forest. Strange things happen that I can’t remember, but it was scary. At one point, the father and son go for a drive in the forest. At the end, the son is sitting in the car outside the house. The father is inside the house, upstairs, and encounters some strange old woman in a chair. The father somehow falls or jumps from the second story window and does a face-plant on the car windshield with the kid inside.

I remember it being the scariest thing I had ever seen, but I was just a kid. I wonder if I would laugh if I saw it today.

It’s definitely Burnt Offerings. I’ve always wondered about the book. Anyone here ever read it? Is it any good? Better than the movie or not as good?

I’ve read it. Very spooky book, but all the dumb shit about the Door was a distraction. Not enough to dissuade me from recommending it, though, especially since you can probably find used copies for next to nothing.

Never seen the movie.
