The difficult part of learning to like harder booze tends to be getting past the alcohol hit - the burn, if you prefer. You’re after something that will mask the up-front hit, and something sickly sweet will do that nicely. More straightforward mixers - ice, water, soda, and (I’d assume) lime juice - won’t do that for you as easily.
And with regard to scotch, if you’re going to be drinking single malts I wouldn’t go for Cardhu immediately - try some of the speyside or lowland malts first. Speyburn is pretty mild, for instance. Leave the highland and Islay malts until you’ve got a handle on the others and you’re in a position to really appreciate them.
Well, a good gimlet is just on this side of being straight liquor, IMO.
Also, I might suggest drinking just about anything chilled the first few times. By the time you taste it, it’ll be too late, and you better damn well learn to like it
Daniel, an added note w/ regards to mixing alcohol. Pick one good brand that you like the taste of, choose somthing in the MID quality/price range. It doesn’t have to be top shelf BUT don’t buy generic either unless you’re having a party and plan on serving punch or mixes.
(I prefer Gold Cuervo, but to each his own, tequila is something you have to build a tolerance for, it is not just alcohol BTW)
back to the point…Some will say this is bullshit but from my experience and others may agree. Mixing booze w/ carbonated beverages may dilute and mask the alcohol but tends to give the drinker a worse hangover.
and never mix your liquors as someone suggested, ie: try this and that > not in the same night unless you want to get sick as a dog. Some liquors DON’T mix!!!
One of worst things in the world is a combination of wine and whiskey for the inexperienced drinker.
If you really want to get sick…try Mad Dog 20/20 and Wild Turkey, guarantee that’ll do it!
Oh yeah, for a filler (food) get you a big bag of Tostito’s w/ the lime seasoning…
maybe even grill some jumbo shrimp and BBQ ribs…damn that sounds too good!
At one time, the friendly Isle of Skye folks who produce Drambuie were including a little booklet with each bottle, containing, get this, recipes for cooking with Drambuie. Can you imagine using Drambuie like cooking sherry?! Hell, even your mention of ice strikes me as being almost sacrilegious!
Oh, man, are those addicting, or what? I quit smoking over three years ago, and giving up sucking down two packs of Mule-Burros every day was easier than staying away from those lime chips!
Can I suggest screwdrivers?
Vodka and Orange Juice is easy to drink, and tastes good any where from 1 part v 10 part oj, up to equal parts oj and v. Also the oj is a good way to get up to the nutricienists suggested 5 portions of fruit and veg per day.
