I like the way my head feels when I’m high. It’s a nice pleasant, floating sensation. I’m a happy person normally, and I make a very happy intoxicated person. It’s nice once in a way. I like it. I really do.
But.
I hate the taste of alcohol. Wine, beer, hard liquor, exotic liqueurs - you name it, I hate it.
Now, so far, I’ve only managed to imbibe alcohol by chugging down a few pegs of something really potent. It’s like I’m taking medicine. Then I sit back and wait for the feeling to hit me. My friends all understand, and don’t mind my pained, agonised expressions while I gulp. They’ve tried diluting the stuff with coke, juice, tonic water, whatever, in the hopes that I’ll be able to actually enjoy it. No go. I still hate the taste, the smell of alcohol. Stupid danged vile fluid. Just for once I’d like to be able to take it slow, to relax and chat while I’m drinking it, to actually enjoy the drinking process. There’s where you dopers come in.
Please help me concoct some sort of drink that’ll give me a high, but will not, will not, will not taste of alcohol!! Help?
For those who may want to counsel me about the evils of drinking, I appreciate your concern, but I’m well aware of the downsides. I drink maybe three or four times a year, and neither intend to, nor desire to, increase that frequency. I’d just like to enjoy it the few times I do.
Sounds like your friends have already tried to help you out with finding drinks you like and it hasn’t worked, so you might as well keep on tokin’ in the free world and worry about getting busted when you’re in the back of the cruiser.
Maybe the alcohol will taste better when you realize it’s completely legal.
Don’t get me wrong: weed’s OK, but you can have a drink wherever you go (within reason) and not worry about arrested.
I’m the same way. I didn’t drink for the longest time and by the time I tried it my palate associated the taste of alcohol with something that had turned bad in the fridge. This is especially true of wine and beer. I take a sip of even really good wine and my mouth says, “oh, the juice has turned.” Hard liquor isn’t any better as I find it very bitter.
About the only exception I have found to this is brandy. There are many different kinds the best in my mind is a cognac called Martell’s. It isn’t the most expensive brand and many people will tell you to avoid it because it isn’t the “best” but it tends to be much smoother than the other widely avaiable labels. Another good one is a good vodka, which is actually form of brandy, served straight direct from the freezer. Any good vodka will do but my very favorite is Absolute Kurant which is currant flavored. I’m not even sure it is available any more though. Absolute does have many different flavored vodka’s available though.
Something else I tend to like are coffee drinks. If you drink coffee and have not tried coffee with Bailey’s I strongly recommend that. Hot chocholate with a shot of Bailey’s is quite good as well.
err…Gorgon Heap, I don’t do weed. Haven’t even seen any in my life! Legality isn’t the question here at all.
Degrance, tried coffee with Bailey’s, rejected coffee with Bailey’s. And Absolut is precisely what I gulp down (with anguish, I might add).
Is there no way to make the damned stuff taste halfway decent?
Try some of the flavored schnapps. They make a wide variety of flavors that hardly have any alcohol taste…that’s why kids drink the stuff like soda pop and get totally blasted on it.
i am not a proponent of drinking just to get “high”. ok, now that that’s out of the way.
i too think the taste of alcohol is the pits. i therefore recommend some of the cordials and flavored schnappes, seconding Duke of Rat. Midori, a honeydew-based liqueur, is smooth but perhaps not potent enough. some of my favorite schnappes flavors are root beer, butterscotch, possibly watermelon, and (perhaps a specific brand name, rather than flavor) Bahama Mama’s Tropical Schnappes. (i always loved the look on people’s faces right after they’d had a sip, whenever we’d pass around the flasks while out hunting.) and dang it, but i can’t remember the name of the raspberry liqueur that my hubby bought me for my birthday. it’s one of the more expensive ones, but quite pleasant for sipping.
as far as mixed drinks go, a White Russian (vodka, Kahlua and creme) can be potent if you have several. i’ve scaled back to just Kahlua and creme when i have a drink while dining out.
then again, the first mixed drink i could ever bring myself to swallow was that old standby, rum and Coke.
i also find some of the flavored wine coolers to be okay, particularly if they have “berry” somewhere in the name. (ok, so i’m a sucker for raspberries and such.) the raspberry or blackberry-flavored Merlots and fruit-flavored white zinfandel wines are about on the same level.
me? sweet tooth?
of course, on the flip side, there could be the slight chance that you have a mild allergy to alcohol (it does happen), and your body is trying to tell you something.
If you can’t stand the taste and you don’t like drinking to get drunk, why are you drinking at all?
To the OP: I can relate, kind of. I’m not as bad as you, but I really dislike the taste of any alcohol. I drink maybe once a month and I do it to get drunk (which takes me about 4 or 5 drinks at most).
Hard cider works sometimes. For me, however, it seems the best way to mask the taste is frozen daquiris. Around here they sell big 32 ouncers at drive throughs, but I’m sure you don’t have that luxury.
I’d recommend you just smoke marijuana, but I’m kinda not allowed to do that on this board, and, even if I was, your country’s ultra-harsh drug laws would prevent me from doing so in good conscience. You want to have a good time, not get a cane upside your ass and several years in jail.
you’re assuming i drink much at all, in the general run of things. you might as well ask the OP why s/he wants to get high if s/he can’t stand the taste either.
i drink occasionally because either A) i’m in a social setting where it’s generally expected, B) i’ve found something that doesn’t taste too bad, C) i find it to be relaxing (i.e., half a wine cooler, and i fall asleep on the couch).
having lived with full-blown alcoholics tends to de-glamorize the whole shit-faced scene.
I love a good beer, but if you wanna drink sissy drinks(j/p ) here’s some recommandations.
Find someone who knows how to bartend. You’ll be suprised how well a good bartender can make a shot of vodka(kettle one has the best flavor) taste. That still tastes nasty though.
Some good drinks to order:
White Russians(not for the lactose intolerant)
Amaretto Sours(tastes like a sour patch kid ^_^)
Raspberry Schnapps and ginger-ale(raspberry ginger-ale)
These are my favorite ‘sissy’ drinks and you’ll often find me sipping on one any given saturday night. Either that or I’ll be chugging a dark pint of grog!
I second the Schnapps suggestion. It’s not too potent but it’ll get the job done. You might also want to try Pucker - they have a ton of flavors that are really good, I suggest you try Island Blue. Doesn’t taste like alcohol at all, IMHO.
Just something that jumped into my head because of your location in Singapore. There’s a condition that’s somewhat common among Asians where an enzyme that breaks down Alcohol isn’t produced. I knew a couple guys in college who were missing the enzyme and they wern’t able to drink any alcohol because it was essentially poisonous to them and just tasted horrible.
Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor and am going on second-hand knowledge from what they told me. Hopefully someone will correct me if I got anything wrong.
How about a pina colada? Sweet, fruity and if you make it right, no alcohol taste. Generally true of anything frozen (except a margarita which I don’t think you can ever mask tequila.)
Or, I’ll second the amaretto sour or just amaretto with Dr. Pepper. Also, raspberry (or any kind of berry) vodka with cherry 7up.
My sister-in-law doesn’t like the taste of alcohol either and has been on a similar quest. She has found some mixers in the liquor store for frozen drinks you make in the blender at home by combining ice, vodka (I think) and the mix. She likes Mudslide, which is choclate-y and Dreamsicle, which is sort of orange-vanilla. Both yummy to me.
