Help me pick the most "definitive" songs by each of these bands...

What about “Hold on My Heart”? Is that okay?

Seriously, Genesis is turning into the big roadblock here, and it’s only 2 letters away before I have to deal with it. And it’s not just the Gabriel/Collins split. I’ve been a lifelong fan since “Abacab” (when I was 14), and I know every single one of their songs by heart, except of course for the last two crap albums. And I know better than anyone else that NO individual song comes close to being their “definitive” one.

But I never thought about the “Cinema Show” medley. That has got to be the ticket. I’ll have to check through all my medleys (there’s lots of them, hehe) and see which one works best!

Oh! I was stuck on what to pick, but that’s PERFECT! Thank you!!
: insert tongue-stuck-in-cheek smiley here :

Great list, AchimbaProphet!

But these two are better, methinks:

Adam Ant- “Friend or Foe”
Berlin- “The Metro”

And Britney Spears on the list? Yikes!

Believe it or not, every one of those is on my Need-It List, on mp3, on a compilation of some sort (boy did THOSE get useless after P2P went mainstream…), or already slated for inclusion (Adam Ant, Buggles, Morisette, and I might toss in Britney, too. LOL.)

As for all you guys posting your own lists…geez, you’re making me wish I could afford to run out and buy them all right now. My brother’s already coming over tomorrow to lend me his Jimi Hendrix, Dread Zeppelin, N.W.A. and Public Enemy discs…

Darth – not to hijack again, but I could have sworn that “Physical” was originally a Gary Newman song… I’ve been wrong before, however.

If you’re going to use “A Day In the Life” for the Beatles, try to use the mix that’s on the Imagine soundtrack (it’s about 5:07). It doesn’t fade in from the “Sgt. Pepper’s” reprise or have the weird stuff at the end.

I said:

I didn’t mean that it was a Pigface song, just that it was the other cover tune.
IIRC, “Physical” was an Adam Ant tune.

How can this be anything but “Sweet Dreams”?

A few other suggestions:

Alice Cooper: Personally I’d go for “I’m Eighteen” myself.

ELP: “Karn Evil 9” for it’s lyrical kick assery alone.

And for I still think “Riders on the Storm” is classic Doors if you want to stay away from “Light My Fire.”

And if Queen’s big three are out have you considered “Bicycle”?

Well, “Karn Evil 9” is kinda long, unless I just use the “hit single” part, in which case it’s too short. I’m still on D though (amazing how many thrash/death/speed/kill/doom metal bands there are that start wtih D!) so I’ve got time left to worry about it.

Alice Cooper’s “Welcome to my Nightmare” is a tactical necessity since it’s the only album I own by him, but like I said earlier, I would have chosen it no matter what.

Everyone keeps saying “Riders on the Storm” for the Doors (on the other board, too) but I just don’t see it as their “signature” song – I’m highly tempted to use the full-length “Lizard King”, which shows off Morrison’s poetry better than most other songs. Either that, or “The End”. Or the wonderful post-Morrison classic, “I’m Horny I’m Stoned” j/k

Queen’s definitely gonna “Bohemian Rhapsody” On closer inspecition, it’s got ALL the Queen trademarks: piano ballad beginning, totally whacked-out center, and a kick-ass rock finale.

Back to the Beatles: Earlier, you mentioned that you only had the White album, and you were going pick “Why Don’t We Do it in the Road” to mess with his head. Why not go all out? Why not “Revolution #9”?

lookninjas – I’m sinister, but not downright EVIL!

Offspring - “All I Want”

Pink Floyd - “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”

Dire Straits - “Telegraph Road”

Eagles - “Desperado”

Golden Earring - “Radar Love”

Peter Gabriel - “Red Rain”

Garbage - “Only Happy When It Rains”

Enya - “China Roses”

Tool - “The Grudge”

The Corrs - “Only When I Sleep” - This song gives me a hard-on every time I hear it.

Alan Parsons Project - “Turn Of A Friendly Card”

Metallica - “One”

Just got some donations from my brother…

Journey “Wheel in the Sky” (Good thing, I only had the sucky live version.)

N.W.A. “Straight Outta Compton” – no, not “Fuck the Police”, that’s pratically a comedy song now, esp. after Cop Killer…

Public Enemy “Fight the Power” - Far and away the greatest AND most definitive rap song. Ever.

Dread Zeppelin - heh, I’ve been twisting his arm for this one (“5,000,000”) for years. 'Course, now I gotta pick one somehow…

Whole Lotta Love! Led Zepplin in an Elvis reggae kinda way. Great stuff.

Hmm, thread’s starting to die, better kickstart it with the F-G’s I picked:

Faith No More - Epic
Falco - Zuviel Hitze (or Der Kommissar?)
Fates Warning - At Fates Hands
Fear Factory - Zero Signal
Fields of the Nephilim - Preacher Man
Filter - Hey Man Nice Shot
The Firm - Radioactive (or Midnight Moonlight)
The Fixx - Deeper and Deeper, or One Thing Leads to Another, or Stand or Fall, or…
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
A Flock of Seagulls - You Can Run (although Space Age Love Song is a more popular choice)
Flotsam & Jetsam - No Place for Disgrace
Foghat - Slow Ride
Foo Fighters - Everlong (or Monkey Wrench)
Foreigner - Juke Box Hero
Peter Frampton - Show Me the Way
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax, or Welcome to the Pleasuredome (Two Tribes isn’t really their “definitive” style)
Fudge Tunnel - any suggestions? (I have them all)

Peter Gabriel - tossup between Biko or Solsbury Hill
The Gap Band - Burn Rubber
The J. Geils Band - Flamethrower
Genesis - In the Cage/Cinema Show/Slippermen/Afterglow medley from “3 Sides live”
David Gilmour - Murder
Godflesh - Devastator/Mighty Trust Krusher (still considering others)
Golden Earring - Radar Love
Grand Funk Railroad - Closer to Home/I’m Your Captain
Grateful Dead - Truckin’
Great White - Once Bitten Twice Shy (yeah it’s a cover, but my other choice was “Face the Day” which is ALSO a cover…)
Keith Green - How Can They Live Without Jesus?
Green Day - still considering, but I like RawkStah’s suggestion of “Brain Stew/Jaded”
Grim Reaper - See You in Hell
GTR - Jekyll and Hyde
Guns n Roses - November Rain (this is a lock)

AchimbaProphet, the CD my brother gave me didn’t have “Whole Lotta Love”, so I downloaded it but really wasn’t impressed with it. However the AMG suggested “Heartbreaker (Down at the end of Lonely Street)” so now I’m waiting to d/l that one (gee I hope no mods are reading this!!)

I love all of Dread Zepplins stuff, even their original works. I always felt that Whole Lotta Love really personified who they are. You really can’t go wrong with any track

Rancid – Tough call. “Olympia, WA”, “Brad Logan” or “Roots Radicals”

Rollins Band – “Low Self Opinion”. No question.

Ween – “LMLYP”, anything off of The Mollusk, “The Homo Rainbow” or “The HIV Song”

Rocket From The Crypt – “Born In '69” or “Glazed”

Rev. Horton Heat – “Liquor, Beer and Wine” or any song about Jimbo

Atari Teenage Riot – “Sick To Death”, the only song that has ever scared the hell out of me

They Might Be Giants – “Dr. Worm”, “The End of The Tour”, “I Palindrome I”, “See The Constellation” or the entire Flood album

Daniel Johnston – “Casper”, “Casper the Friendly Ghost” or “Lousy Weekend”

Frank Black – “Los Angeles” or “Headache”

The Pixies – I’d go with “Debaser”, but anything would be good.

The Beetles – “Letter B” (trust me on this one)

NWA – “Fuck Tha Police”

Belle and Sebastian – “This Is Just a Modern Rock Song” or “The Boy with the Arab Strap”. Fans more hardcore than I will disagree.

Beatallica – “The Thing That Should Not Let It Be”

Operation Ivy – “Knowledge”. Maybe “No More Bad Times”. Nah. “Knowledge” is the one.

Tom Waits – “Innocent When You Dream”

Public Enemy – “Fight The Power”

Public Enemy and Anthrax – “Bring The Noise”

The Dixie Cups – “Iko Iko”. AFAIK, the only minimalist song to hit the Top 40

The Shangri-Las – “(Remember) Walking in The Sand”

The Jaynettes – “Sally Go 'Round the Roses”. Good GOD, what a great song.

Ike and Tina Turner – “River Deep, Mountain High”. Phil Spector’s Best. Work. Ever.

Radiohead – Pre-OK Computer: “Fake Plastic Trees” or “Just”. Post-OK Computer: “Paranoid Android”, or “No Surprises”

Strong Bad – “Everybody To The Limit” or “Techno”

Gotta disagree. I’d go with “You’re One”

Uh, guys? Re-read the part of my OP about not hijacking this thread into generic “favorite songs by favorite bands” lists. I’m making this compilation for a friend based on my personal collection, so I wish to be Lord And Master of this thread.

Your lists are interesting, though (and helpful for keeping this thread bumped.) For instance:

I’ve got these, and your choices are the same as mine. (I was even thinking of using the PE/Anthrax track as a bonus, lol.)

My brother had these, but unfortunately they were stolen by his crooked ex-roommate. :frowning: (And yes, “Gangster of Love” was the Steve Miller version, which got banned for copyright reasons…) If I had any Ice Cube solo, though, I’d go for “We Had to Tear This Muthafucka Up”

I’m going with “Barracuda” here.

Good choice, and you’d think it’s their signature song, but I disagree; “Straight Outta Compton” is the one. It’s practically the theme song for gangsta rap in general. (And after “Cop Killer”, “Fuck the Police” seems downright tame.)

“Low Self Opinion” is the Rollins Band’s best song? Thanks for telling me, now I know never to buy any of their albums. Bleh.

Nice choices for F and G. I especially like Filter with “Hey Man Nice Shot.”

I know people like to be different, but how can the Green Day choice not be from Dookie? “Brain Stew/Jaded” is nice, but what about “Welcome to Paradise”, “Basketcase”, “Longview”, or “The Secret Song (I Was All By Myself)” ?

And in the Peter Gabriel toss up I’d say “Solsbury Hill”
