Help me recall the author/title of this story

This is a long shot but I remember reading a story about thirty years ago about a decapitated head that is still conscious/alive and pulls itself painstakingly up a flight of stairs using teeth and tongue and eventually reattaches itself to a body, controls the arms enough to sew the head on, and exacts its revenge on the murderer…

Note that the story is at least thirty years old. I think it may be a minor classic of the genre.

Googling was not very helpful.

Reanimator? I vaguely recall a scene like that in either the first or second film. I know, you said story, but…

It is “Heading Home” by Ramsey Campbell. Facebook friend just came through a few secs ago!

I’d have called it “Head’s Up,” but sorry, no idea …
