Help me regulate the temperature of my fridge.

I have an ‘el cheapo’ refrigerator/freezer. As such it does not have a light in the freezer, only the fridge, a classic first world problem, but that’s not the problem. The problem is that there is only one adjustment of temperature that controls both the fridge and the freezer. Well the real problem is it is not well balanced. The refrigerator section is hovering around and just above the freezing mark 32F (0C), but the freezer is only about 10F (and the ice cream is soft), which is should be 0F or lower.

I don’t have many options as it is out of warranty, but thinking I may be able to adjust it somehow by blocking fridge vents a bit or somehow shortcutting air flow so some bypasses the fridge, or some other method, allow a colder freezer setting without freezing the fresh food.

Does the freezer self-defrost, or is ice built up? If there’s ice it may need to be defrosted. There’s also a thermostat sensor in there somewhere that may need replacing.

You may already know all this, but just in case …

Generally speaking a fridge / freezer combo creates all the cold in the freezer and then has some vents between the compartments which permits some of the cold to leak over to the fridge side.

Right now it looks to me like the total supply of cold is inadequate. SeaDragonTatoo covered most of how to improve that. Another thing to check is that the condenser coils on the outside rear of the fridge are not dust and grease encrusted. They need to be clean.

Once you have enough cold the next step is to address the distribution of the cold. Usually there’s a vent between the two compartments near the top. Which usually has a flapper valve driven by an electric motor and controlled by a thermostat. It can get stuck, have the motor die, have wiring fail or have the thermostat fail.
