Probably because “circling the wagons” is a very human thing to do when you feel that a group you belong to is under attack by outsiders. If someone says something unflattering about a member of your family, you probably get defensive. You aren’t likely to agree with them, even if in another context you would admit that the unflattering thing they said is true.
You are the person who made the “typical” claim. I invite you, as is the usual way on the SDMB, to back up your statement.

It’s not even slightly hard to find Muslims speaking against terrorism if you look for it. Even the popular could media could do it, if they chose to.
No, it’s not even a grey area. The Christian religion bears no responsibility whatsoever for the holocaust. Pan-Germanic Nationalism has nothing to do with Christianity at all. Trying to blame the Catholic Pope for not doing enough is also lame ahistorical trash.
