Help me spend my Literary Guild gift certificate!

During my annual “Rejoining of the Book Clubs” I received a certificate for a free book along with my first order of books because they screwed up the order. Of course, now my brain has gone completely blank and I can’t think of any books I’ve been wanting, aside from obscure ones that are not available through the club.

I’d love to read something other than a bestseller, preferably non-fiction.

Got any suggestions?

Aren’t book club great? I rejoined the Literary Guild and got six books with free shipping for a grand total of $10.99.

Try “Snowbound” Can’t remember the author’s name, but she was the doctor working at the South Pole who found a lump in her breast and had to treat herself until rescued. It was facinating. Also, a wonderful, sensitive work by Sherwin B. Nuland: “How We Die; Reflections on Life’s Final Chapter”
For myself, I’d look for a reference book. Or a “List” book I recomend “The Handy Science Answer Book” ; “Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations”; “New York Public Library Desk Reference”; “The Official Rules” (funny); “Dictionary of Word Origins”

Oh! I forgot the best one! Its “Jumping Fire” by Murray A. Taylor He was a smokejumper (duh) it reads like a novel. Of course, I could be bias, my husband is a firefighter who started his career as a 'jumper. enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestions! Actually, the “Snowbound” book is on my list to read eventually and I had forgotten I wanted it.
The reference books are a good idea too–I already have The Official Rules and Dictionary of Word Origins. Those are great reads.

You’re very welcome. If you have an open mind about Stephen King, and have any aspirations toward writing, I also recommend “On Writing” He has a very pragmatic view on the nuts and bolts of fiction.
