Help me to Vegas on the cheap.

So my Sis and my niece, who I helped raise, is turning 21 and Mom decided that Vehas would be a good place for this to happen. Issues came up and at the last minute I am going in my sisters place. I am in Vegas now to this Saturday with my niece and her boyfriend.

Yay I’m here, for the first time.
However this was sudden so I’m stretching finances until Saturday.

So what are some good/fun ways to stretch my money?

Souvenirs on the strip are surprisingly cheap. I bought a shirt for $3 and a doll for maybe $10-20 for someone who collects them.

I’m not sure where to eat cheap. The buffet when I was there was $20+ a person. My dad said they used to have cheap buffets but I don’t know if or where they still do.

Cheap eats: Taco El’ Gordo is fantastic.

Cosmopolitan has a pizza place called Secret Pizza. I forgot where in Cosmopolitan it is, or how we got there but it was a nice hidden gem.

That’s all I can remember right now.

If you gamble on the strip, we had luck with low tables at Tropicana.

Bring some money. Win more money using that money. Have the trip pay for itself.

Ellis Island is a block off-strip and you can get a full steak meal plus a beer for under $10.

I’ve found Craps to be the best [most economic] game out there in terms of money bleeding, especially if you aren’t 100% laser focused much less an experienced gambler.

If you sit at a bar in a casino and have money in the video poker machine, the bartender pours you free drinks. You can play a minimum bet hand every couple of minutes and drink at a deep discount.

There were all sorts of cheap eats and sights on Fremont street.

Look on Groupon and Ebay for cheap eats.

We found discount tickets for Wicked Spoon (awesome buffet) on Ebay.

Assuming you’re on the strip, the Deuce bus (double decker) is $7 per person for 24 hours unlimited on/off. The route cruises the entire strip to downtown, and then back again. So it is a cheap way to visit and check out all the different casinos on the strip as well as downtown.

Downtown both table limits are generally lower, and you can find cheap buffets (some better than others). Downtown there is also the Mob museum, and that is reasonably priced for a few hours’ entertainment.

On the strip there are a lot of hotel/casinos that are worth just walking through: Venice, Paris, New York New York, Bellagio, Caesar’s (and the Forum shops), etc.

Sam’s Town, which is located a ways off the strip (and also a ways from downtown) has free shuttles to/from the strip (at Harrah’s). Once there you can bowl or catch a movie (18 theatres) for relatively cheap.
From Sam’s Town you can also catch a shuttle to/from downtown.

I’ll second the Mob Museum. It’s in the old City Hall. I found it very entertaining. I also liked the Neon Museum which is a mile or so away. You can see a lot of signs from old Vegas. You do need a reserved time for the Neon Museum since it’s only guided tours. Both are not too far from Fremont street. However, do not walk from the Mob Museum to the Neon Museum back to Fremont like we did. It’s a bit of a walk in the heat. But more than that, I literally felt safer walking through downtown Baghdad than I did on that walk. Take a cab.

I’m pretty sure there are a couple places that sell same day tickets to different shows for half price.

Thanks for the info!

Being from Alaska, clothing is dated and not cheap. Where are some good places to bring her shopping?

Go around to car dealers and test drive expensive sports cars.

If you have more time than money, and can resist a high pressure sales pitch, go listen to a time share sales pitch for a couple of hours and get a couple hundred bucks or tickets to a higher priced show or restaurant.

A lot depends on how much money you have/want to spend:
Tons of money:

  • Fashion Center mall (across from the Wynn and Treasure Island)
  • Wynn shops
  • Forum Shops (connected to Caesar’s Palace)
  • Bellagio shops
  • Venice / Palazzo shops

Some money:

  • Mile of shops mall (Hard Rock casino)

Quality for less:

  • Las Vegas Premium outlets (off Charleston )
  • If you have a car, there is a good factory outlet center at Primm (right at the border with California). It is about a 45 min. drive. It’s right off I-15 heading south (toward LA). You will see Whiskey Pete’s on the west side of I-15, and Buffalo Bill’s and Primm resort on the east side. The factory outlet mall is on the east side next to Primm.

Bargain:

  • There is another factory outlet center on Las Vegas Blvd. south of Mandalay Bay (past the south end of the “strip”). It used to be nice, but it has kind of gone downhill.

I knew a gal who went to Vegas in a $2000 Toyota and returned in a $500,000 Greyhound bus!

Pinball hall of fame is a cool place to spend a couple of hours and probably do it for about 10 bucks. It’s off the strip. It has machines that are in working order from back in the 40’s through today.

Let’s see:
