I have heard many recordings of Au fond du temple saint, a gorgeous duet from Bizet’s opera The Pearl Fishers, but this is my absolute favorite. The problem is that I have it as an old MP3 file, and haven’t a clue as to where it came from. I wish to track down and buy the full recording (if there is one), but haven’t had any luck so far.
I don’t know whether this will help any, but here are a couple of points that might make this recording stand out.
- The track includes not only the duet, but also the recitative immediately beforehand. That lengthens the playing time to 7:45, significantly longer than any other recording of the piece I’ve come across.
- The tempo throughout most of the piece is noticeably slower than any other recording I’ve heard, and only picks up toward the end.
- At the moment in the first chorus when the tenor reaches for his high note, both he and the baritone drop the dynamic into a hush.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
