Help me Understand India and the Indian Culture

Well I work in a tech company in Ireland, and none of our PCs have firewire ports - the only computer in the whole office that does is my G4 Mac. So it seems that firewire ports in PCs is maybe non-standard outside the US, and/or the US models are a year or two in advance of what’s standard here.

Hmm…yeah from what I can tell, you can add a firewire card to a desktop PC, or if you have a portable laptop computer you need A FireWire CardBus Card: A credit card sized connector that fits into the PCMCIA slot on the computer and has 2 FireWire ports to allow you to connect to FireWire devices.

Maybe they have laptops that don’t have PCMCIA slots…

firewire as a standar has not yet made a huge inroad in india. for that matter not even has USB! its ok in bigger cities like mumbai and b’lore, but not in the smaller towns. also, when people compare the prices, the USB costs cheaper, so people choose that. after all, life in india isnt too hactic, that you would need the faster firewire over the slower USB

Update: well, we’re getting up to speed. Five coworkers are en route to Mumbai right now. They’ll be at the JW Marriot in Mumbai at Juhu Beach for about a month. I’ll be spending my first month there in January.

Hey, anybody live near that hotel?! Anybody know someone working there? I know it’s a looooooong shot, but it’s worth asking. I’d be the coolest guy ever if I could have someone greet them!

By summer, we’ll have an apartment.

I just learned that one of our folks who went there in July to visit the potential vendor was kidnapped and was missing for a day. He was robbed of his shoes, money and some other stuff and was quite shaken up. Just thought I’d mention that.

note: It’s four female coworkers stepping way outside their comfort zone
