Hallo! I’m hoping to recreate a shrug/bolero something like (or exactly like) this one.
I’ve searched Ravelry and come up with this or this. Any suggestions for tweaking either of these patterns to look more like the etsy project? What sized needles do you think I should use? I think the yarn pictured is one of the novelty yarn varieties with “bits” in it - maybe something like this one? I don’t usually like these silly yarns, but the texture with the very open knit speaks to me.
I’m perhaps a little more comfortably with crochet than knitting, well, more in practice, anyway, so if anyone’s seen a comparable crochet project…
Thanks for any advice!
I’m a knitter, which is what that looks like – don’t think it would have the same drapey effect in crochet.
Looks to me like it’s done on about a 17 needle – and like the larger holes in the middle/at either side are done by doing those rows on huge needles (35?) – but a very simple stockinette in some kind of ribbon yarn.
I agree with both of those assessments - but not the needle size.
It looks very similar to a shawl pattern I did recently.
Row 1; K1 Yarn Over K1 to end.
Row 2; K1 drop stitch K1 to end.
So each alternate row drops the Y/O stitches, it resulted in the same “double size” rows in the second link. It was on 12mm needles throughout.
Yeah, you may be right on the big holes. And a 17 (US size) is 12.75mm, so you may well be right about that as well – I was just looking at needles in my basket o’ needles, and I jump from 11 to 17.
It’s only that I was so recently working on a similar pattern that I picked it up.
I inherited all my needles and tend to go on UK sizing (the most common 8 is noticeably bigger than 9) but really, if it ain’t written on them, I have no clue. But you’re correct, in my box o’ bits, there is a distinct jump from regular fat to humungo sized needles. The only wooden ones I have are those 12mm beasties (that I got when I couldn’t get the 12.75’s you mention).
Thanks ladies. Maybe I’ll get some 17ish needles and try it out. (I have sock needles, and some 35s, but not much in between.) I wonder if it’s knitted as a rectangle, side to side, then the corners joined up for the “sleeves”…
That’s what it looks like to me – but I missed the fact that the big holes were done by yarn-overs, so take that for what it’s worth.
