OK Dopers, I’ve run into a problem here with my laptop, and I think you can help me fix it.
My computer will not play any sounds whatsoever. Not out of the speakers, not out of my headphones, nothing. Yes, the volume is turned up and all that basic stuff is taken care of. I’ve gone through every step of troubleshooting for my Conexant AC-Link Audio Driver.
One step of the troubleshooting did yield results, but I’ve still got a problem. It told me to roll back my audio driver to the last version that worked correctly, so I followed the steps and did so. Voila, my sound was back on. Not so fast though…restart computer…sound off again. Well, I tried to roll back my driver again, but I couldn’t because I was on the oldest version on my computer. Then I went to the Windows Update site and reinstalled the latest version of the driver. My sound worked again, but it stopped working upon reboot.
I’m running Windows XP, and I think the problem may not be with my audio driver. I don’t really know much about what I’ve been doing, just following directions. A small fact that may be of note - I’ve been using a new mp3 player during the last couple of days. It’s an iRiver iGP-100. This may or may not have contributed to my computer’s problems. I’m very reluctant to call customer service; I really don’t want to put up with some guy asking me if my speakers are plugged in or if the volume is turned up. Help me SDMB. You’re my only hope…short of handing my computer over to a professional repairman.
I’ve tried disabling my sound device and then reenabling it. This works, but it’s just like before when I updated or rolled back the version of my driver. When I reboot my computer, the sound is back off. I mean, I can get it to work every time I start my computer, but that means every time I start it I’ll have to go into the Control Panel, disable the sound device, reenable it, then I’m finally ready go. Horribly inconvenient if you ask me.
It seems as if my computer is just forgetting about my sound device until I manipulate it in some way, at which point it remembers and begins to use it again. Excuse me for not understanding any of the technical mumbo jumbo that’s going on here. I just really want to get this taken care of.
I’m using the latest version of my sound driver. Would it be wise to consider purchasing a new sound card? Thanks for any help.

Or you might try removing the sound card from the device manager tab of the system control panel and then re-installing it. Make sure you have the driver disk/or the driver on your hard drive before attempting to do this.
To do so go to the control panels. Choose system. Click on the device manager tab. Open up the sound devices, click on your sound card and hit remove. Reboot and Windows should automatically try and re-install the sound card. If it doesn’t go to the add new hardware control panel and let it scan for new hardware. Windows should find it.
