My final porject for Intoduction to Folklore and Mythology is coming up, and I need your help!
Tell me a story. It doesn’t matter whether it’s family history, a bedtime story your folks told you, and urban legend, or some work-related story. Just write out a few paragraphs and post.
The only things you need to include are who told you the story, and your name. Feel free to make up a name, though, if you don’t feel like giving out your real one. Not like my professor is going to track any of you down
Thanks for the help!
Well here I was going to email you a story (it’s long, and I’ve posted it here before so I didn’t want to post the same thing again), but your email isn’t listed.
Mine is. Shoot me off one and I’ll send you something based closely off something my father wrote. I’d give you my father’s version as well, but I don’t know how to get at it.
My dad’s mother’s mother immigrated to the USA from what is now the Czech Republic. English was Great-Grandma Michl’s third language. Besides Czech, she spoke German, as her homeland had been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Also, her second husband had served in the Kaiser’s Army during World War I.
Anyway, Great-Grandma had a bunch of figurines in her house. One was of an old man she called Urban (pronounced OOR-bahn). On warm days, Urban would be next to a replica of an old-time wood-burning stove that had a ladder built into it. On cold days, he’d be perched on a chair along the edge of the stove, overlooking the “belly” of the stove. When my siblings and I were little, Great-Grandma would tell us that Urban himself climbed up and down as the weather warranted. On cold days, she would say: “Look, kinder! Urban, Urban sitz an Feuer!” (Urban, Urban sits on fire!)
Once we got to the age where we quit believing in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, we realized that Urban had assistance when making his journeys, but the adults in the family would keep up the charade – “You’ve never been here at night, so how do you know for sure Urban doesn’t get up and walk around?” Great-Grandma died over thirty years ago, and Urban’s current whereabouts are a mystery to me.
My first name is Bob, so you can call me Bob Sternvogel in your report.
Thanks for the help! Anyone else got something to share?
I don’t like bumping threads, but this project is due tomorrow, and I still need quite a few more stories…
