Help me with the Shop app

What is happening with the Shop app? I use it mostly to track shipments, but now I’m looking at a website and it gives me the option to buy with Shop, and it has my credit card number. If I use the app, it has a different, expired credit card number. I’m trying to limit the places where my credit card number is saved because my CC number was stolen, and of course I don’t want that to happen again. So how does Shop get my credit card number? How can I delete it if it’s not in the app?

Googling, it appears to be owned by the Shopify platform so my guess is you saved your now-expired credit card number to a website that uses the Shopify platform, after which it was shared with other Shopify clients and the Shop app.

Best practice is never save your purchasing information with any company/corporation. Don’t know where you live, but some countries have necessitated by law that people can request this information not be stored. Many web sites will have a tick box. Tick ‘NO’ I do not wish purchase information be saved.

It’s also good practice to have a separate credit card for online purchases specifically for those companies you do not trust (all of them). This card can have a low limit. I have one with a $500 limit.
They will tell you the information is kept encrypted, safe, secure . . .it isn’t. Nothing online is safe.

If you accidentally have more than one account with them, you can request that the other one be deleted too.

Otherwise, if this is an ongoing concern for you, consider using a virtual card service like privacy.com that makes a new card number for every merchant.

Thank you! This is all good info. I’m trying not to save my CC# on any websites or apps. I opted out of Shop Pay, so hopefully that will take care of the problem. I don’t mind using Shop to track shipments, but I don’t want them to be involved in payments.

You might also want to check with your credit card issuer to see if they offer virtual card numbers. Bank of America did for me for a while, and I was able to use their online app to generate a new number for every merchant. You can then individually block merchants without affecting the other ones. (It’s the same service as Privacy.com offers, just done through your bank or CC issuer).

Otherwise, you’re just kinda at the mercy of the merchant and can only hope that they don’t save your credit card number. There’s no real guarantee of it.

My 2¢: If you’re OK sharing your card number with anyone at all, consider using Google Pay or Apple Pay (or Amazon Pay, or yes, Shopify Pay) whenever possible… ironically, this is much safer than sending your number directly to merchants. The big processors have the resources to do proper cybersecurity in a way that smaller businesses can’t always. When you use one of those payment methods, the merchant never even sees your credit card number (they just get paid directly by the processor) so they have no chance to store it. When you send them the raw digits, you have no control at all over what they do with it afterward.
