I own a 1996 Toyota pasao. It seems that two of my three break lights don’t work and I don’t know why. The top, middle one works fine, but the two side one don’t. I’ve changed the bulbs and the fuzes and still no luck. Any ideas what’s wrong?
Well first off I think you are referring to your brake lights. You know the red ones on the back of the car…
A break light would be the check engine light.
First off are you sure you changed the correct bulb in the rear light cluster? There are often 3-5 bulbs in a rear taillight assembly and only one or two of them are for the brake light.
Secondly are you sure you changed the correct fuse? Check all of them, sometimes the legend on the fuse box cover is incorrect.
Lastly, has the car been in an accident? If so was it in the rear, or left side? If so there might be a wiring issue, a loose ground or disconnected wire.
Did you do anything that might brake them?
Are the new bulbs in the right way round? Some of mine have offset bayonet pins and won’t work if inserted incorrectly.
Check for a loose or broken wire. Make sure the connections are clean of corrosion.
No, that’s on a Toyota Paseo. He has a pasao…
If the high center brake light works, the fuse and switch are good. That leaves the bulbs, sockets, and wiring to them past the junction with the high center light.
Bulbs are the culprit 90+% of the time, so make sure you’ve addressed the correct bulbs and that they are correctly installed, as suggested above.
For both sockets to have problems is quite rare.
Wiring problems are not common, but if the bulbs are indeed good, that’s what I’d pursue next.
