I unplugged my floppy drive about 3 weeks ago (don’t ask), and then today I plugged it back in. The little green light on it always stays on and it won’t read (the computer lags real bad for a couple minutes and then it says the drive is not accessible or some such.) There’s really not much else I can say. Anyone have an idea of what might be going on?
Check to see if you plugged in the data cable backwards… I’ve done it on a couple occasions, and while it won’t hurt the drive, it will make the light glow and Windows will lag until it realizes it can’t talk to it.
Ok…I turned the cable around and now windows has decided to label it “Removable disk drive” instead of “3 1/1 Floppy A:” Weird weird. Any ideas?
Check the following:
-
Pull the cable out completely, then replug it to the appropriate connectors either end, just to make sure that each end is properly seated.
-
Ensure that the trace on the data cable lines up with pin one at either connector.
-
If in any doubt about the integrity of the data cable, try using another (working) identical cable as a check.
-
Try substituting the existing drive with another working unit to check whther the drive may be at fault.
Good luck!
you also have to inform the cmos bios it’s there…so set it up there first. the red side (yes, there is such a red side) of the cable goes on the same side as the power supply on the floppy. did youplug it into the right connector on the cable? which one? the middle one or the other one? most floppy cables have two connectors.
