i have an asus laptop A6000km running xp. just recently some of the keys have got confused. in particular m became 1, jkl became 123, and uiop became 456- . The only reason i can type this is because the keys seem to work if the function key is pressed down. if it is hardware it is still under warantee, if it is a driver or a faulty setting then it would be far easier for me to fix it
thanks
Hold down the blue Fn key and press the button that says NumLock
Try holding the keyboard upside down and see if any liquid runs out.
Whenever mine have done that it’s been coffee (at work) or beer (at home)
Although once it was red wine.
If not then check the language settings. (Control Panel, Language)
Make sure they match your country. I’m not aware of any other settings that could cause what you describe, unless you’ve got some strange keyboard software installed.
Nah, it’s a laptop and Numlock is on (you’ll see that the numbers it’s producing are printed in blue on the keys producing them) Numlock is not normally an appropriate setting for laptops, as there is not usually a separate numeric pad, but there are a number of ways this can accidentally get switched on:
-Accidental activation by pressing Fn+Numlock key
-Plugging in a full-size keyboard (or a docking station, or sometimes, other hardware that the system sees as a keyboard, such as barcode scanners and KVM switches)
-Allowing someone else to remotely administer the system from a PC with a full-sized keyboard
-Setting the default Numlock status in the computer’s CMOS settings
-Setting the default Numlock status in the keyboard settings in Windows Control Panel
thanks mangetoute, it works! :smack:
I agree what a stupid setting to have on a laptop
back to work
Ok, see if you guys can fix this one:
About once a week, on my laptop, when I begin typing in Firefox, certain keystrokes will simulate “Ctrl + F”, and it tries to find what I’m typing. Sometimes it’s the ’ key, sometimes it’s letters. Any ideas?
I’ve had that Firefox problem before - it tended to be punctuation characters that would set it off and if it kicked in halfway through typing a long post or email, it was infuriating. Closing all Firefox sessions would make it go away for a while. I keep fairly current on Firefox upgrades though and it went away permanently after an upgrade.
The problem is discussed a little here:
