Help! My laptop is stuck in limbo!

Sorry to post a computer problem here (I’ve been around long enough to know better) but I am stuck. I first tried Toshiba support online but their server seems to be down.

I loaded new software (Eudora 5.1 upgrade - though this is not necessarily the cause, it seems like it may somehow) onto my machine earlier and didn’t have any problems as I used it periodically throughout the day. I didn’t turn the laptop off, only closed the lid and had it go on standby. I opened and closed it several times during the day. FYI, I have a toshiba portege 7000ct with Windows 2k.

THEN, the last time I opened it, nothing. Blank screen but I can hear periodically a little disk rap like it’s stuck on too big of a problem. I shut it off and restart it, still in limbo. I pull out the battery and unplug it (like without power I’d get back to a normal starting point), then reconnect and try to restart - same problem, still stuck in limbo. The disk drive does not kick in when I restart. So, I pushed RESET. Nothing. I tried this while it was “off”, and while it was on. Still in limbo. Ctrl-alt-Del, nothing.

There must be a way to reset, but with the a: drive not working, the screen blank, recovery disks seem to be worthless…

Can anybody help? Sorry to pollute GQ with this…(but I have my unbacked up novel on my hard drive and am just a little nervous about learning a harsh lesson in virus control :frowning: …)

With power plugged in hold down the start button for about 20 -30 seconds, release it and then press the start botton again just once.

If you’ve got any PC cards installed it might be worthwhile to take them out temporarily.

Hold down the ‘Backspace’ key when booting. Then it will bypass the hibernation.

while it is on (no a/c - just batt) take the batt out (and pc cards) - leave it out overnight. Then try to restart it.

Does it seem like win is starting but you are just not getting video? If so and you have a network try to access it through the network to get your file. - probally not the case but could save your butt

Still no luck but thanks for the suggestions. With power the 30 second hold and push once did not work. The backspace doesn’t work because it doesn’t fire up (it just acts like it is still “on” so backspace doesn’t affect the startup routine (non computer person here so I hope that makes sense)).

I’ll try pulling out the battery overnight but I don’t have any pc cards to take out (?) unless there is a screwdriver required.

K2dave, no, it’s not just a lack of display, the pc doesn’t start up.

Trying to keep one of these

That rap could be a sign that the hard drive has died. A broken hard drive often gives off a clicking sound as it tries to access the disk.

You may have to go to a computer repair shop and see if they can recover things.

It’s working again - thanks all for your help. I let it sit all night with the battery out then turned it on to no effect. But I then hit reset for the 1,000th time and it fired up, for about 2 minutes and crashed again. Back in limbo.

I then got bold and pulled out the memory card and reinstalled it. That seemed to shake it up and now it’s back in business! All files are now backed up! Phew!

Thanks Astro and K2dave and RealityChuck!!
