The Lion is not home, I dare not call him at work over this. Our computer is making this low but piercing sound, it’s driving me nuts. I have put the volume on mute, turned off the printer ect. It seems to be coming from the modem. Someone tell me what to do before I lose it and chunk the darn thing out the door ! Please !
Could be lots of different things…if it’s like a whistle, make sure the fan is spinning OK…
Turn off, let sit a minute and turn on again. If it’s something inside, it could be the drive, so be cautious.
Otherwise, give it a good, sharp smack. Always works for me.

Gee Zette, so if my dog isn’t working right I should give her a good, sharp smack? Just kidding! But I think Zette might have something there. You may need to vacuum out the inside and get some crap off the fan. Oh wow! Like when the shit hits the fan… Bwah ha ha!
Never mistrust the advice of a tech, no matter how strange it sounds , Byz
Ayesha,
If that happens again, don’t smack it- take it to get looked at. Also, buy a can of compressed air (from a computer store), remove the cover of your PC, DON’T SHAKE THE CAN, and using short bursts spray some air in your machine. You probobly have some gobs of dust or hair in there (check the fan).

I would like to say thanks to every body who took the time to try to help my wife with this little glitch(not the person).
Frankenstien the computer gets cranky every once in a while.
The modem is a external voice/data/fax that forgets that it is supposed stay mute all the time.
Dust in the case is not a problem as I frequently open it up to work on and upgrade the beast.
Fluids, Uncle Beer are you saying that coffee I spilt on the keyboards twice had nothing to do with the computer not working right. I have some oil in the kitchen , maybe I’ll give the modem a shot of it, or maybe some of that strange smelling yellow tequila that is floating around in your Guy Stuff thread.
