A few days ago, we bought too much food and had the freezer packed in extremely full and tight. Just about every last cubic inch was taken up. The food level is now back to normal levels, but ever since then we have had frost forming inside the freezer. Lovely beautiful frost on the walls, on the food. What’s going on, how do I get rid of it?
You may have just brought in enough new moisture when you overpacked it that it’s taking the defrost system a few cycles to clear out. I’d let’r go a week before getting too concerned.
There’s really not a switch/sensor or even a water line that could cause this by being hit. (Maybe there is pressure on the defrost timer - but I can’t diagnose that without more knowledge of the exacts of your fridge)
But a water line would be ice and water at the bottom, not frost. There shouldn’t be a physical switch. But a the corner of a plastic bag could create a gap in the seal.
My WAG is that when you stuffed the freezer full some of the items were pushing against the door, even just a little tiny bit and the door gasket wasn’t making a good seal all the way around. This’ll let warm (humid) air in which promptly condenses and freezes.
More than likely your compressor is VERY hot after continuous running. It should have an overload shut-off, but you may want to use an auxilliary fan to increase airflow over the compressor (usually at the bottom of the fridge) to help the motor stay cool while it attempts to get everything down to temp and remove the frost. Had the same thing happen after a week vacation…
to know it seals tight you should hear a whooshing sound just as it is about closed. also a bit of sound after as the warm room air that got let in cools and the seal squashes shut.
And don’t forget the “dollar bill test”, where you close the door on a dollar bill, leaving part of it sticking out. It should be quite difficult to pull that dollar bill out without reopening the freezer.
Also, your defroster fan may not be blowing. There’s a ton of refrigerator repair info available online if you google your symptoms. Don’t ask how I know this.
Much thanks to all. As mentioned, it was not shutting properly. Something on the left side was misaligned. I took everything apart, measured a dozen different pieces to try and figure out which one was off. When I found the key part (the runner [is that the right word] on the left side), for lack of anything better to do, I gave it a good shove. Something clicked, it moved up, and then everything lined up.
Again, thanks to everyone. I can tell this is very basic knowledge, but it saved me a repair bill.
