Said chocolate addict has wide interests, and recently read that dogs can be poisoned by the theobromine in cacao hull mulch, which is spread on the soil in gardens.
Yesterday, said c.addict was at the garden center and spotted said mulch for sale, 2 cubic feet for about five dollars.
Theobromine is a chemical in chocolate.
Typical of addictive behavior, aforesaid person conceived that a BIG CHEAP supply of drug-of-choice was available. No doubt, theobromine could be extracted by simmering the cacao hulls in water. Thoughts did occur that this move could have its negative aspects but any such thoughts were immediately set aside.
Fortunately, chocolate addict is also lazy and did not actually buy a bag. Yet.
Help the c.addict resist! Aversion therapy, mulch warnings, Darwinian commentary–whatever might work!
I’ll assume you own a doggie - your dilemna calls for CrazyCatLady’s advice (or many others). You are, of course, correct that chocolate is poisonous to canines…I have to wonder if there’s that much of the active ingredient present in mulch, though. I’ll leave this one to the experts.
If you do go back and buy a bag or two of the mulch, you should see if they’ve got any Chocolate Cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus). It’s flowers have a sweet chocolate perfume.
Hmm, but how much crack would the nickel bag yield vs. how much pre-processed crack you can buy for five bucks from your local dealer?
I’d take the savings in time and go to my local dealer to get my hit. But that’s just me.
Blonde, no doggie, it’d all be for ME!
Necromancer, you trying to make it worse?
Dragonstar, Good point, it would be an amateur product, whereas the chocolate you buy comes all rich with sugar and cocoa and cocoabutter and vanilla and walnut oil…
You want aversion therapy? I’ll give you aversion therapy!

My job is done here …
I was once a carob addict, sprinkling them in my frozen yogurt – until I read the calorie content. Yikes!
