Help settle a debate: Do you have two sinks in your master bathroom?

I was going to say this. All the House Hunters people get sniffy if there’s only one sink in the master bath. I’m pretty sure that show is funded by someone who sells bathroom fixtures and granite countertops.

Newer homes have 2 as a rule. I think it became the norm when it became the norm for both husband and wife to work outside the home. Hubby needs to shave and wifey puts on makeup at the same time.

I think the main thing is if there is enough counter space for it, it costs very little, as it doesn’t require any more plumbing in the wall, and very little under the sinks…so for the cost of a sink, a faucet, and a few tubes you can charge a little more for a house, or sell it a week sooner.

And try as I might, I am always getting called out for the 2-3 whisker remains that remain in the sink, try as I might to get them all…so if she had her own sink, that would be a win.

That’s lovely, but am I understanding this correctly? The original plan was for two sinks in that space? It doesn’t look like there’d be enough room. It looks perfect the way you have it.

Our house, built 1991: 2 sinks.

In-laws house, built 1963: 1 sink but they are remodeling it to have 2. And they are retired.

We just had one built and went with one. Yes, they push two on you but we could figure out why we’d need two. It seemed pointless.

We’ve owned five houses in four states during our marriage. Only the first one had one sink in the master bath. Of the other four, two had double sinks in a single vanity and two had double vanities. I prefer having double vanities. I like having my own space in the bathroom without feeling crowded by him and his toiletries. But I admit to being spoiled when it comes to such things. Having only one sink in the master wouldn’t be a deal breaker, but it would be on the list of negatives.

Yep, two sinks were in the original plan. The architectural drawing had two sinks side by side with each sink placed near the edge of the vanity. It didn’t look too bad actually. We just didn’t see the purpose of having two sinks in a guest bath.

I credit my wife for asking if we could change it; I probably wouldn’t have questioned it.

Never lived in a house with two sinks in any bathroom. Hell, I’ve never lived in a house with more than 1 1/2 baths. But I’ve been hospitalized and/or in a convalescent situation almost annually since 2012, and I end up watching a lot of HGTV when I’m in those places, and it seems like EVERYONE on the realty shows wants double vanities. I can see where it might be more convenient, especially if the couple both work similar hours (getting ready in the morning at the same time), but it also seems just as indulgent as anything else on those shows.

Condo, built in 2002, 2 bedrooms, two bathrooms, the larger one has bathtub and two sinks, which Kropotkinskaya informed me upon close of sale were “hers and hers sinks” and I could do anything I wanted in the smaller, no tub, bathroom.

The real utility is storage. Neither my wife nor I have very many (like none) cosmetic products, we do have lots of pills to take in the morning, and cups and things. It would be a waste for someone living alone.

Just one sink for us- but our house dates from 1947.

I don’t even have a master bathroom. Mine is closer to a slave bathroom – closer to a pipe with flowing water running into a hole in the floor.

About the only bathrooms I would expect 1 sink in are half-baths. If the bathroom is large enough for a bathtub, it is large enough for 2 sinks. I will grant however that the master-bath is the only place where 2 sinks are required. There are after all 2 people trying to get ready at the same time there. In the family bath, 2 sinks are desirable, not required.

I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a house with two sinks in a bathroom.

And I agree that I can’t really see the point. The only thing I can think of is that two people wish to wash their hands at once. For anything else, you can both just use the same sink. And, if you need more storage, doesn’t it make more sense not to have a sink taking up part of that?

I would’ve guessed the Dope would skew less fancy-schmancy than a private bathroom off a Master Bedroom. We’ve always lived in older houses that had one small bathroom downstairs, and we’ve had to get creative to add a small shower/sink upstairs.

Every bathroom I’ve ever lived with (as a kid, a student, an adult, and a dad) has been for everyone, not a “private bath” connected to a bedroom.

So my answer is “one sink, but not a private bath”.

Since when is an ensuite/master bathroom “fancy-schmancy”?

Our house was built in the mid 80s and has two sinks in the master bathroom.

2 sinks here.

Yes. I’ve lived in four homes, and all have had the double sinks in the master. All were built post-1990, FWIW.

Not sure I can recall being in a home that didn’t have two sinks, actually (at least those where I’ve seen the master…)

I don’t think of it as fancy. The first time I saw it, though, was in my aunt’s house in the 50s. It wasn’t a big or expensive house, rather just a suburban ranch near Chicago.

My great-uncle had a master bath with what I think is called a Roman Shower. Now that I thought was fancy, but it was just an average ranch in a neighboring suburb.
