: stepping out of character for the veteranarienne :
**1.) Tell me a little about yourself. **
Social misfit (only society doesn’t know it yet) loved & respected by many, despised by 2; possessed of breadth of knowledge with only moderate depth in any common topic other than insurance. Probably a genius but too lazy to act/think like one.
2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?
The e-mail address will belong either to one of my wife’s friends, in which case I omit introductions and first type the name ala:
"Crazy,
I have crystals in my urine.
–Inigo"
or the address belongs to one of my…OK, my only friend, in which case the e-mail title may or may be cryptically relevant to the message, and the message begins in short, terse sentences ending with a signature of some kind, relevant to the overall message. I do not have occasion to send messages to an entire couple.
3.) How do you put your return address on mail?
I don’t. I want to make the mailman work for his living if I’m only *close * on the address.
4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status?
37, male (lesbian in a man’s body, but that’s another thread), married (to a gay man trapped in a FINE woman’s body).

Computer science major of midwestern extraction and leftist political leanings.

Generally Firstname and Firstname Lastname. Each couple has an arrangement that feels more “right” for me. My parents are “Qadgop and Momgop Mercotan,” though the reverse feels only slightly less right. One aunt/uncle pair is “Aunt1 and Uncle1 Lastname” while the other is “Uncle2 and Aunt2 Lastname” - the first one, in this case, is the one related to me by blood. If last names are different, it’s Firstname Lastname and Firstname Lastname, again in the arrangement that just “feels” right. Usually the person I know better or am somehow closer to ends up first.

1.) Tell me a little about yourself.
I have a few posts that address this, I think;) Okay, fine, I’ll play along … 20something tutor completing the 7-year plan (but I’m not going to be a doctor)
2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?
If I know their preference, I use it. I so rarely send physical mail to anyone that it isn’t an issue.
3.) How do you put your return address on mail?
My name, my address, etc.
4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status?
22/M/not-yet-married (definitely not single, definitely no hardware on my fingers)
1.) Tell me a little about yourself.
SAHM and librarian, 2 small children, obsessive reader, quilter, oddball LDS.
2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?
Whatever they use: usually “John and Susy Q-ball” (or Susy and John, whichever is more poetic to the ear), or “Susy Ivory-Q-ball and John Q-ball.” It’s rarer for me to put “Mr. and Mrs. John Q-ball” unless it’s a formal invitation, which has happened once.
3.) How do you put your return address on mail?
We have a stamp now, so it’s always “Mom and Dad Danger” with the proper mailing address underneath.
4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status?
30, female, married 8.5 years.
I am a retired critical care RN. I make stained glass and I paint. I have 3 cats. I was born and raised in Seattle, but spent much of my adult life hither and yon.
Wife’s first name, husband’s first name, last name.
With a little clear sticker.
I’m 58 years old, female, married for the third and last time.

2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?
Depends on if it’s formal or not. If it’s formal it’s addressed as Mr and Mrs. If it’s just a letter, female’s name first, male’s first and last name together.
3.) How do you put your return address on mail?
I have printed mailing labels. My name first and my husband’s first/last name together.
4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status?
40ish, female, married
**1.) Tell me a little about yourself. What are your age, gender, and marital status? **
I’m a 23 year old woman, and single. I live in Boston, MA. I’m a college graduate, but I’m working as a temp at the moment.
2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?
I very rarely write letters, and when I do send mail, it’s usually the type of thing taht is only addressed to one person (like a birthday card). If i were to send some kind of correspondence that required such an address, I would write it out:
Jane and Jack Smith
or
Jane Jones-Smith and Jack Smith

Other than the info in question 4? I’m not sure what you’re looking for. I live in the Pacific NW, I’m more or less a nerd, I’m poiltically liberal.

If I know how they want to be addressed, then like that. If I don’t, then, if she changed her name, then:
<his title> and <her title> <his first name> <their last name>.
If she hasn’t changed her name:
<her title><her first and last names>
and <his title><his first and last names>. -
I generally don’t, I’m horribly lazy that way.

30, female, single.
1/4: 26 (will be 27 in a couple of months). Cohabitating romantically. I have a steady job at a bank but am currently taking two years off to study journalism. Right now, I’m taking a little law course over the summer. Interests include almost anything I don’t already know everything about, the card game Magic the Gathering, and writing. Politically leftist, half-serious misanthrope and flaming bisexual. Well, not that flaming, really. Smoldering, more like. I live in southern Sweden and always have.
-
I usually address it to Familjen Smith. In English the closest equivalent is “the Smith family” but in Sweden it’s perfectly proper to address a letter that way. Kind of like “The Smiths”.

2 John & Jane Doe if I know them.
Mr and Mrs John Doe if I don’t. (Why I’d be writting to someone I don’t know I have no idea.
3 Simply put my address on the upper left hand corner no name.

I’m a stay-at-home parent by choice, and I thoroughly enjoy it. Born & raised in a small town in Alaska, now living in Omaha, Nebraska. Little education beyond high school (some office-type training, never put to use). Liberal at heart, but politically inactive. Enjoy sedentary activities (TV, internet, reading).
-
The Lastnames, or HerFirst & HisFirst LastName (but I think I only do that for my in-laws). If their surnames are not the same, I’ll address it to HerName & HisName.
-
LastName, Address (whether by hand or with address labels).

31 y.o., female, married to a man.
1.) I have 3 kids (2 adult daughters, 1 18-yo stepson), some college education, I work for a state government agency, my parents divorced when I was a kid and have both remarried, I have lived in Washington State all my life.
2.) Depends on the couples last name(s) and how I know them. If they share the husband’s last name-Jane and John Doe. If they are married and don’t share the same last name, it depends on who I’m more familiar with. If it’s the woman who’s my friend/relative-Jane Smith and John Doe; if it the man-John Smith and Jane Doe.
3.) How do you put your return address on mail? I have free labels from junk mail that list Ms. my first name, last name, then address. I use these for almost everything when I have them (I’m lazy). I’m too cheap to buy my own printed labels; when I don’t have the the freebies, this is my standard mode: If it’s from my huband and I–my last name, my husband’s last name (Doe OtherDoe). If it’s something from me (birthday card to an old friend)–my last name only. If it’s from my husband–his last name only.
4.) 38 yo female, married 9 years to my second husband.
1.) Atheist conservative Texan, geophysicist by profession, played rock, R&B, bluse, jazz, what-have-you drums, both pro and for jollies, for decades, but I’m over that now and I live in a college student ghetto in the colorful part of town.
2.) This doesn’t come up that often, and it would vary by case. For friends, I use both names, with the first being the one I’m closest to. For condolences I address it to the one I know and family, or just to the family if I know them. For something more formal, I suppose I’d use Mr. and Mrs. XXXX, but I can’t honestly recall the last time I might have done that. I don’t send Xmas cards.
3.) If I’m at home, I’ll use one of the hundreds of return address stickers my insurance agent sends me every year. They have my full name (in bold) and address. If I’m printing an envelope at the office, I usually leave my name off and just print the address (physical - not a P.O. box). Every once in a while I hand address an envelope in which case I’ll often use my initial and my last name (as if anybody could read my handwriting).
4.) 51 year old male, single at this moment (but you never know - I’m going to the grocery store in a few minutes).
I’m dying to hear your theory.
1.) Tell me a little about yourself.
Leo. Daughter, sister, aunt. Friendly, sarcastic, crazy. Blunt. Often ashamed of my emotions. Very self-critical. Working as a waitress.
2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?
Depending on who I’m sending it to - if I feel not like being nutty, it’s :
His name & Her name Lastname
Number Street
City, State Zip
3.) How do you put your return address on mail?
Usually I send cards, and I’ll put it on the back of the envelope, on the top of the flap:
Initial. Lastname
Number Street
City, State Zip
If it’s business, it’s on the front in the upper left corner:
Lastname
Number Street
City, State Zip
4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status?
24, female, Single.
1.) Tell me a little about yourself.
I’m a geologist currently splitting my time between consulting work and academic research-type pursuits. A big sci-fi fan practically since I was able to read; guess I always liked stretching the bounds of my imagination. I would rather hang out close to home with a small group of friends than go out to paint the town red. I have a very broad curiosity streak (and I really want to know what your theory is!).
2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?
If they’re friends of mine, John and Jane Doe or Jane and John Doe, depending on which half of the couple I know better. People I don’t know well and people of my parents’ generation, Mr. and Mrs. John Doe.
3.) How do you put your return address on mail?

I’m a single mom, graduate student, reading addict, and nature lover. I am a bit hyperactive, self-critical, and disorganized. I have changed careers a zillion times. Sometimes I care too much. I love to write stories. I am able to draw people and things with an accurate likeness, beat standardized tests, and leap piles of procrastinated-upon laundry in a single bound.

I’m a small-town newspaper editor in the Southwest. I am relatively well-educated, well-traveled and happy.

If I know both of the people, I will put “Dan and Gail Fossoy” (if I have known Dan longer), I will put “Gail and Dan Fossoy,” (if I have known Gail longer). If they wife has kept her maiden name, I will put each name. If I only know one of the people and not the other, I will address it only to that individual. Generally, if they have children, I will put “To the parents of Tommy Fossoy.” If I do not know the people, I will put Mr. and Mrs. Fossoy.

On bills, “TVH,” and the street address, on business-related stuff “TV” and my last name. And on social notes “TV and Winnie” and our last name. I figure if I do the writing, I get top billing.
