I need to fill out a German tax form for my business. My agency has filled out some, but not all of it. I’m having trouble with the Address section. The form has:
Straße und Hausnummer _______________
Wohnsitz/Sitz _______________
STREET AND HOUSE NUMBER. Got that. So, “123 Main Street”.
RESIDENCE/SEAT. Huh? Is this asking for an apartment number? Or for City/State/ZIP?
Anybody? Anyone familiar with German address conventions? What does “Wohnsitz/Sitz” generally refer to?
Wohnsitz/Sitz is not generally a part of address conventions in German. Usually, the address is written as
FirstName LastName
StreetName Number
ZipCode City
Country (if different)
Wohnsitz/Sitz seems to be an invention of the tax bureaucracies and is usually used to indicate the country of residence. In your case, though, “Wohnsitz/Sitz” seems to take the place of the Zip code and the city, so that’s what I would enter in this field, followed by the country name:
As far as I can tell, “Wohnsitz” and “Sitz” indicate the same thing; “Wohnsitz” would be used for a person while “Sitz” would be used for a business or organization.
