Help two noobs get started in WoW

Well, I’ve done more googling, and found some positive reports on Hughesnet. So I called the local installer, and I think I’m going to give it a try. They have a 30 day trial, so if it’s just unplayable, I can turn it off. Sales rep said they have a lot of people asking the same questions, and promised it’s doable. She even new which package WoW players have been happy with. We’ll see how it turns out. She’s supposed to call me back with an install date…

For the game install…hmmm…I think I may have my old install saved on a portable HD. That would probably get me current up through WotLK, but I’d need to patch pretty much since that was released. Any guestimates of how long that will take?

Depends on how many patches you need and what your downstream bandwidth is like. Plan for hours.

Kinda what I figured.

Want more drama? I do not think the battlenet thingy existed when I played. In any event, I can’t seem to remember my login info–was wanting to look at subscription options. Worse, I’m not sure which email was associated with my WoW account. I’ve emailed Blizzard support, hoping they can help me.

Being able to play WoW at all will be nice. Being able to play my existing characters would be much better. I want my gnome! We’ll see.

I left behind my beloved Female Gnome Mage (Warbear, 8/8 T6) and Female Dwarf Priest (Holy, Engineer, Tailor) when I left the US server I was playing on to migrate back to EU servers.

I do miss my Gnome a lot, but cross region transfers are not possible :frowning:

If I ever make it back to the US I might reignite them, flip them to Horde and look up the BDL folks.

The WoW folder on my computer includes one called updates. Is it possible for this to be burned to a DVD and mailed to** Oakminster**? Or is there something special about the update files that they need to be downloaded? By the time he gets the internet set up, the DVD could be there.

Thanks,** Dag**, but it doesn’t look like that will be necessary, the install guy said I get unlimited downloads for the first 5 days. I’m patching now. About 3 hours left on 3.2.0, + whatever comes after that. It will take awhile, and I may not even be able to get to my account before Monday anyway, but progress is being made

Playing as a mage ruined me as far as leveling other characters. My mage is 80, my others are all in the teens and 20’s. When I try another character, all I notice is what a pain in the ass the game is to get around in without teleport and portals.

Heh…I used to make a decent bit of coin doing portals to Shatt. I generally don’t charge if I’m going anyway, but people will ask, then pop up a trade window with gold for me

Now, I guess it will be portals to Dal instead.

Of course, every mage either has or will offer to portal his group/raid after the run, and then promptly hit the wrong spell and teleported himself while leaving others behind…:o:smack::o

And in breaking news, I think I have recovered my account, and merged it in to battlenet. Still patching, but maybe I’ll be playing tomorrow!

jsgoddess, have you and **Asimovian **decided whether or not to start playing?

It does make a huge difference, doesn’t it? On my Hunter, I just did the Azshara quest where you have to delivery the four tablets around to various capitals, and all I could thing was, “Man, this was so much faster on my Mage.” On the other hand, there are some things I can’t do. For example, I still haven’t finished the Amphitheater questline on my Mage–she’s just too squishy to get past the first boss on her own, considering that she can’t kite it.

I use macros. It automatically shows up as the Dalaran portal when I’m in a group and the teleport when I’m solo. (It will also switch to teleport when I’m in a group but holding down a modifier key.)

Congrats! Since you’re not a nubling, you’ll probably want to make your way over to the main WoW discussion thread here.

Thanks, and I’m in that thread now. Think I can sorta qualify as a nubling though. So much has changed since I last played, it’s almost like I have to relearn the game, at least beyond the very basic level, anyway.

One thing that is slowing me down is I have to respec every single toon, and I have lots of toons. I think I’m going to try to get each one logged in long enough to claim the penguin pet at least, and then mostly focus on hitting 80 with my mage. I’ll do the respecs as I get around to it, and may just kinda guesstimate on the lower level ones. When Cata drops, all the talents are changing again anyway.

Might not be a bad idea to go to talentchic.com and just pull the most popular build for each spec. That’s only if you’re looking to save some time. Wowwiki also has links to popular ‘standard’ builds. (I just google search ‘wow <class> builds’) There are also ‘Leveling builds’ if your toons are below cap. Which as I re-read your post is what you are talking about. Still I’ll leave the post because someone may find it useful.

The penguin pet, IIRC, is BoA (bind to account) so as long as you’ve claimed it on one toon you can always mail it around to all the others also. So even if you roll a new toon (same server/faction) you can send it a little penguin pet.

There’s no pressing *need *to do either of those.

1.) As you observed, all the trees are changing drastically come Cataclysm, which is dropping some time this year. There’s no point in respeccing an alt now if you’re not going to play it until then. Why not spec each one as you use it?

2.) AFAIK, the pet will show up in your mailbox when you log into the toon for the first time–not before. So there’s no rush there, either.

Which isn’t to say that you can’t log into each and every alt–just that you shouldn’t feel *required *to.

Yeah, you’re right, there’s no rush to get every toon spec’d. It just takes precious questing/pvp time to do a full spec on my higher levels–2 DKs, and a 'Lock that’s about 50. So far, I’ve just played the mage, and a 29 hunter.

Good to know I don’t have to worry about losing the penguin. I don’t even use those things often, but I like to have them.

Nope, BoP. The one that was BoA was the Baby Blizzard Bear.

There was another BoA pet you got for logging in, I thought. Was it the whelping?

Dunnow, may have been at one of the times when I couldn’t log in. Right now it’s Mr. Chilly, and he’s BoP (I just checked it this morning, after realizing that I only have one BBB left, apparenly I got into a flurry of cleansing backpacks at some point).

If it matters to you, dwarf hunters will start out using guns, draenei hunters will start with a crossbow. Plus, female draenei are hot. So go blue-skin.

Looks like we’ll initially be Alliance (that’s what the friends we’ll be playing with, at least to start, are).

Asimovian is out of town probably until at least the 31st with rather poor internet connectivity. sigh
