Help with a Hemingway short story

I happened to remember this one from high school recently. Pretty meager info:

  1. I think it takes place during the Spanish Civil War
  2. There are lots of refugees mentioned
  3. The story is mostly a conversation between an old man and a soldier/guard.

Anyone???

Was it an excerpt from “For Whom the Bell Tolls”?

Perhaps “The Old Man at the Bridge.”

It opens:

Only three pages in my copy of the first forty-nine.

Many thanks, Doc!

That collection of short stories is the best, IMHO. Ernie had more than his share of problems as a person, but those stories are just amazing. The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber is the best short story I have ever read…

And I have a first edition of that collection, too!!
