My family is Cherokee and since the time we were little we would connect with animals. Mine was always the Raven or the Blackbird. I was wondering if anyone knows Cherokee enough to have a translation of a name for me. It would be one who talks to ravens or Raven talker. I am trying to get in touch with my roots and was hoping to start with a name for myself! Any help is much appreciated. =) Thank You!
Every time someone starts a thread and mentions Cherokee heritage around here someone brings up “Cherokee princess syndrome” and expresses doubt said claimant is on the level. I’ve had that treatment several times when mentioning my spouse’s Cherokee background, despite the fact he has names, photographs, and other actual evidence of the existence of his Native relatives. You don’t have to grow up on a reservation speaking a dying language to have Native heritage.
Personally, I don’t care much either way - it’s pretty obvious to me there are a LOT of people with Native heritage who can’t prove that with evidence that would hold up in a court of law. Yes, some of the family stories/legends are way out there, and some probably false, others distortions, and all the other possible variants as well. It’s no different than someone claiming descent from European royalty - may be true, may be false, unlikely to be solidly proven.
Thanks for the info. I might have been one of those people who in another thread expressed doubt about the Cherokee Princess but, at least for me, it was the princess part that made me skeptical, not the Cherokee. I’d not read anything that lead me to belived there was anything close to a “princess” concept in Cherokee culture.
