I have Outlook Express on my computer, Windows XP SP3, but never uninstalled it. I used to get the “compact messages,” but I stopped them using Norton 360’s Startup Manager by stop “Windows Search.lnk” from loading at start up. It’s related to Windows Indexing. I don’t know how else to disable it, so perhaps someone here can help. This might be the simple solution to your problem.
