I asked a similar question and couldn’t pull it up in the search so I apologize for repeating myself (otherwise I would’ve pulled that question to the top). I went out to Best Buy and Circut City today and tried to buy a mini CD recorder for myself.
No one at the store could help me.
Basically the stores had 3 kinds a Panasonic for $199, a Sony for $249 and a Sony for $349. The trouble is they all look similar and all say they do the same thing. No one in the store could tell me what advantage the 349.00 one had over the 249.00 one. (Granted it was about 2" smaller and had a fancier remote.)
What I want is (if possible) to record from my portable regular sized CD. I would like to do it digitally not anolog(sp?). And the remote, as I plan to use it when I run.
Does anyone have any clue what the differences might be? I used to like Sony but I bought a walkman for my tapes and it was awful. They seem to have gone downhill. Now my regular sized portable CD player is a Panasonic and it is pretty good.
Do you mean an MD (MiniDisk) player? If so, they all record digitally from CDs, but be sure that you have a digital/ optical output on your CD player; very few have this as it is a bit pricey, and the recording without it will definately be only analogue. After that, its all down to how many gadgets and features you want, they are all about equally resilient to vibrations as far as I have been able to make out.
The portable minidisc players can be players only or have record features too. The chances are the low priced ones are read only. The high end ones probably record with quality up to an fiber optical connection. They normaly have more antiskip memory too.
For about $350 you can get a packaged minidisc stereo component that will record from your stereo system and a play back only minidisk player.
There are stereo component recorders that have a regular cd slot and a minidisk slot to record directly from the regular cd.
The minidiscs are rewritable also.
Go with the minidisc player for quality portable music, over a mp3 player.
Thanks but I still don’t get it. Basically all three models say you can play and record digitally, in fact what makes me cringe is word for word the descriptions are the same. But obviously $100.00 between the Sony Models and the only difference we can find is a fancier remote and it’s 2"smaller. That can’t be right.
To learn more about the models, you should first record the model numbers.
Then visit <link>http://minidisc.org/equipment_browser.html</link> to read about the differences between them.
Basically what I’ve learned in my admittedly short life about purchases like this is this: always buy the more expensive thing provided that a) you’ve got the money to burn, and b) have friends who aren’t assholes. See, the thing with expensive products, just like expensive haircuts, are that even if you don’t like it yourself, you always know that somehow it’s good, since it costs more. All you do is buy the product, and then never look back. Never read any reviews about it, or other products, never go back to the store to oogle at the ones you didn’t buy, and never, ever befriend a person who will tell you that what they bought (or what you didn’t) is better. That’ll ruin it for you too.
I just got a minidisc player for Christmas, and boy is it sweet. I like it a lot, and have found no problems with it yet. It’s the Sharp MD-MT821. You can check it out at their site at www.sharp-usa.com.
And the last, best way to do it is not to depend on people on this damn board who are so self-rightous that they can’t waste any time on your little question (not me, though). What you really oughtta do is cruise around the 'net looking for MD player reviews.
If all else fails, just buy each product, use it for a day or two, bring it back and exchange it for the other one and repeat until you find the one you like best.
Ok, listen up. Go get your current portable CD player. I’ll wait.
(Hmm hmm hhm.)
Ok, turn it until you see an input jack labeled: “DC IN 4.5V” with a symbol slightly resembling:
->-Co-<+
except the o is a enclosed dot encompassed by the C, which is more of a half circle, and the > and < are diamonds. (I hope this prints out ok.)
now, look at the models at the store and if one of them has the same input jack (I’m guessing they all will) you can digitally record between the two. You may need to buy a special cord (my MiniCD only came with an optical cord, but gives an order number for the digital one.)
As for which is “best” I would say get the cheapest of a quality brand. In other words any of the ones you mentioned should be great. My Sharp was I think around $150 and it’s fabulous. Stay away from anything like SoundDesign or Daewoo. As long as you’re going with the big names (Sony, Panasonic, etc) you should be ok. Just buy the cheapest that has what you want most. In your case, it’s the ability to record digitally so they all should have that.
Hope this helps, let us know what you decide.
