Help with weird MS Word error

Working with Word 97 here. Got an error just now that said, “word could not fire event”.

What the freakin’ heck does that mean? I tried searching with Google with various permutations, and under “Microsoft Word Errors”. Didn’t come up with much help.

Anyone ever seen this? Is it an omen of doom?

There has recently been speculation that the CAP virus has been responsible for documents infected with Melissa being renamed to RTF. In my tests, Melissa samples exposed to CAP were sterile. They did not run. Instead, they displayed the message “Word could not fire event” when opened, and Melissa did not run at all.

(If you enable macros on a document containing a Document_Open macro, you will get a message
“Word could not fire event”. I presume this is because some other “Document” string, which I
don’t currently patch, is matching the macro name, and my patch to VBE.DLL is preventing it from
running. The goal is to find and patch that other “Document” string.)
