HELP!

I’m posting this through Safeweb. I hope this works … I don’t want to have to do this on a full-time basis. I have RoadRunner (cable broadband) both at home and at work, so there’s absolutely no way for me to visit the SDMB directly. My IP number is 65.35.6.***.

You all seem to be stuck at 190.ATM9-0-0.GW1.CHI6.ALTER.NET. Won’t help me … the roadblock from this end is 191.ATM9-0-0.GW1.CHI6.ALTER.NET. It’s UUNET, and from my experience, they’re typically unresponsive to the minor technical issues of users who aren’t their clients. The folks doing the complaining aren’t major clients like Megabigient E-Solutions or something like that, so any trouble tickets SDMB users generate would likely have a very low priority.

It’s gonna’ be a long spring. Anyone find an alternative way to access the site, without resorting to another ISP?

Sigh.

Problem solved! For me at least. Call your ISP’s tech support. If you use Netscape, a proxy setting change will do the trick.

Now I look like a blustering fool! I’ll have to contact my ISP.

By the way, my IP address is : 192.169.x.x

When I try to access http://www.straightdope.com my browser will resolve the IP adress to 65.201.198.8 (which I think is correct).

(psoted through SafeWeb)

My ISP, RoadRunner, won’t give me new proxy settings, and won’t do anything else to assist.

This doesn’t help out those who lost access and can’t find their way here otherwise (though an anonymous surfing service or another ISP); or new users who are just plain locked out, who might otherwise assume The Straight Dope Web site went the way of pets.com.

Try Tech again. Often, the quality & quantity of help you get depends on who you talk to.

the problem appears to be fixed, at least from my end. It is not a DNS issue (I run my own, it has had the correct address all along, and nothing has changed there), it is not a proxy issue (proxy ONLY affects web browsing, not ICMP, telnet, etc, and all were affected).

It does, in fact, seem to have been a routing problem. The only thing that seems to have changed is that my route to straightdope.com is slightly different today. Maybe a change that needed a couple days to propagate.

Anyway, whatever you guys did, thanks.

The last post is mine.
Sorry. Forgot to change the username on my computer.

I think I’m back in without an anonymous proxy. Lemme’ check …

Lalalalalalalalalalala … yup, it works.

All seems right with the world again. Thanks!

Hallelujuh! I can read the boards in the privacy of my own home again!

It is fixed for me too!

Fixed here, too, and I didn’t have to mess around with no scary proxy servers, neither.

In 30 years we will all look back on this and tell our grandchildren, “Yes, we remember the days when you had to get out the box of tools and open the hood and tinker with the computer yourself”, the same way my grandma used to tell me how it was when you had to crank the telephone and go through the operator.

Except that in thirty years I won’t be here. I’ll be dead.

Think about that!

[sub]good to see you posting again DDG![/sub]
