Let’s look at these herbs one at a time and analyze what’s up with them. The Straight “Dope”, as it were.
> Raw ephedra concentrate ma huang
Ephedra/Ma Huang is the first ingredient listed. This stuff is often found in herbal uppers. It increases the heart rate, is the main thing it does. As much as I love herbal mojo, I dislike ephedrine because it gives me the heebie-jeebies. It can make you feel very restless and unsettled because of the rapid pounding heart rate. Not to spread alarmism or anything, kiddos, but there was a case a few years ago when some teenagers deliberately took too much ephedra and died. The heart doesn’t like excessive artificial excitation and in this case just gave up. I don’t know the level at which a dose becomes dangerous, but those kids must have swallowed a hell of a lot. In normal amounts it isn’t dangerous. But you have to be careful with it.
> distilled Wild Brazilian Guarana,
Guaraná is a South American plant whose seeds are a great source of caffeine. That’s all it’s included for. You could drink coffee and get the same effect.
> German Wild Ginko Biloba,
Ginkgo has gotten a reputation as a brain stimulant because it increases the blood flow to the cerebral cortex. But the German studies of it that I know of indicate that you have to take a certain amount of it consistently over a few weeks for it to have this effect, and even then, it doesn’t knock your socks off or anything. A one-off might have no effect.
African Raw Cola Nut,
> More caffeine.
Russian Gotu-kola,
> Gotu kola is an intellect stimulant, but a calming one.
> Indonesian Wild, Fo-Ti-Tient,
Misspelled. They meant Fo Ti Tieng. The Chinese call it He Shou Wu. It assists circulation, the liver, and the brain. Helps to think more clearly.
> Green Tea Extract,
More caffeine.
> Rou Gui (Rare Chinese Nutmeg)
There’s that alleged psychedelic effect of nutmeg again. There’s been a thread or two on the SDMB about whether nutmeg really gets you off. The consensus seems to be that it does, but a does big enough to work will also make you sick as a dog. The small amount in this formula will probably have no effect.
So what about this formula’s claims to emulate Ecstasy? The ephedra+caffeine will make you feel hyper and jittery. The effect of the other ingredients will be negligible. What Ecstasy does is squeeze the serotonin out of your neurons and put it into play. That gives you euphoria. This stuff on the other hand doesn’t do anything for serotonin.
Jomo sez: Utter bunko.
