Oh I see, my mistake, thank you!
Yeah, i used the word wrong. I think there’s a difference between a false god, which is also antithetical to Judaism, but something expected of non-Jews, and a perversion of Jewish belief, which is what i was trying to describe. Christianity is the latter.
You’re about the last person I’d correct on matters related to Judaism, but I’m not sure that’s correct. My understanding of the term “heretic” (from an English language perspective, at least) is someone who identifies as part of a religion, but disagrees with specific parts of doctrine. Catholics viewed Protestants as heretics, because they’re doing Christianity “wrong,” but they wouldn’t view Hindus as heretics, because they’re not claiming to be any flavor of Christian: they’d be Pagans.
Does the word have different connotations to English-speaking Jews?
I have thought of heresy to mean a belief that is fundamentally at odds with the religion vis a vis which it is being evaluated. Perhaps a Christian would not consider a Hindu a hereTIC, but a Christian would view Hindu beliefs as hereSY for one who claims to be Christian.
Okay, I get what you’re saying. Yeah, a Christian (or Jew, or Muslim) who said, “The Hindu gods are real,” would be a heretic, because they’re rejecting monotheism, which is a central tenet to those religions. (Holy Trinity not withstanding.) But they wouldn’t consider a Hindu who said, “Hindu gods are real,” to be a heretic, because they’re not trying to put forward a competing version of Christianity/Judaism/Islam.
So maybe i used “heresy” right. Online dictionaries were ambiguous.
Anyway, Christians claim to be worshipping the same God as the Jews, but aren’t. They are worshiping a man, or a trinity, or something, and their God has lots of traits antithetical to what Jews believe about God.
Oh yeah, I’m sure I’ve seen pictures. Sorry for being out of touch with whatever branch of pop culture that is.
Not tryin’ to advertise – I just researched the hell out of the topic, so it’s what I’m most familiar with.
Oh, I wasn’t accusing you of advertising. I was just trying to make a joke.
This atheist got a good laugh here.
There are many Hindus who are monotheistic. Many Hindus reject Idol worship and many others are atheist / agnostic.
Good to know. Completely irrelevant to my point, but good to know.
