It’s now illegal to feed pigeons or squirrels anywhere in Toronto. Here’s why
New city bylaw prohibits the feeding of wildlife on public or private property in the city.
Impressed that you did not have a pigeon-stepping-on-camera incident!
Unless you were fattening then up to eat, or training them for a show, i don’t see how that was a cafe society post, so I’ve moved this to MPSIMS, where people post about random stuff they do.
What this immediately makes me think of
I’m quite fond of squab, but this didn’t seem to be a post about that.
In fourth grade a family from Iran moved into the neighborhood. Their son was in my class. He was caught by the police shooting pigeons in the park with a pellet gun.
When the cops took him to his house, his parents were puzzled by the situation, since they had sent him out to get pigeons for dinner.
I know, I’m just being silly. I didn’t know that squab is synonymous for pigeon.
It’s like beef for cow. Or pork for pig. Squab is a delicious bird, with rich dark meat. And one is a nice size for a single serving. I used to get it at a fancy Chinese place.
Thanks for the heads up and, if I ever see it on a menu, I’m definitely going to give it a go. Strange that, with all the good restaurants I’ve been to in Chicagoland, I’ve never noticed it even once. I like “Wu’s House”, which is a pretty upscale Asian restaurant. I’ll check there.
Love of squab (the meat of young pigeons) drove the passenger pigeon to extinction (other reasons including habitat loss and low genetic diversity contributed). They were a cheap source of food in the 19th century and were hunted by the thousands (they flew in huge flocks, making easy targets).
We nearly did the same to cod.
My thought exactly.
Although if you’re going to be making squab, probably better to use the one you shot, not the ones you poisoned.
You can’t do this in Toronto anymore. I used to put out some nuts in the fall for my squirrels…

It should be illegal planet-wide.
PLEASE be careful.

And maybe we’ll do
In a squirrel or two,

Confusingly, squab is not offered at Squabs in Melrose Park.
Squabs Gyros welcomes you to enjoy our delicious and fresh flavors where the customer always comes first!
If you wanna prepare it yourself, if you ever see those live poultry places around, many of them have pigeon. I remember my dad buying some when I was kid and I just checked what’s on offer at one on Cermal and pigeon was on the menu.
Wow, there’s a thought! Thanks!
Kimstu,
That has happened a lot in my journey of filming wild birds in public.
