Hernias - how effective is a truss in reliieving pain?

I was watching Swamp People and one of the best hunters pulled a abdominal hernia getting a gator in the boat.

My dad wore a truss several years to manage his hernia and avoid surgery. At least for awhile. He had a hernia repair in his late twenties and then again in his mid thirties. The last repair finally held. I was only six after his second surgery and wasn’t aware of his pain level. I have heard mom say he waited several years for the second surgery. Wearing that truss every day.

Does a truss relieve most of the pain? Does it let you lift anything at all?

For example would a truss at least let this hunter get back in his boat? but not pull in any gators of course. He’ll have to let his partner do that.

Are trusses even worn anymore? Maybe this generation jumps right in and gets hernias fixed.

Yeah, I had a hernia back in college in 1980, never even considered a truss. Just got it fixed, it hasn’t bothered me since.

Trusses are still commonly used by people who won’t, or can’t, have surgery. Inguinial hernia supports are now made out of fabric and elastic with foam pads, so they’re much more affordable than the old leather and steel trusses - $50 to $80 at my store, and we price high. Abdominal binders for an abdominal hernia run even cheaper.

I have no idea what it does for pain levels, I’ve never asked. Several people have said the hernia doesn’t even bother them - I guess that’s something? Don’t know if they’re enough support for lifting, either, that’s a doctor question.

I experienced an inguinal hernia and wore a truss for about 4 weeks before I could see a surgeon and have it repaired and yes it did relieve the discomfort, especially while walking.
