Why does the thread title put me in mind of Willie Nelson?

Most religions I know would place the blame for fatherless children on wayward, loose women not saving themselves for marriage. Not men failing to control themselves or take responsibility for their behavior.
There’s a solution: accurate sex-ed and easy availability of long-acting reversible contraception; or, failing that, combination of two methods, such as condoms and withdrawal. The Dutch (among others) have very low rates of unplanned pregnancies, STDs, and the like.
Anecdotes are not data, but there’s a good chance those two Papists you know just can’t get laid.
That ain’t gonna fly with Sister Mary Impedimentia.
Gouge her eyes out?
“Our” daughter? :dubious:
My grandfather refused to let my mother go to college. She had a full scholarship. I’m sure today she would have just gone anyway but this was the early 50s. I guess good Italian Catholic girls didn’t go to college then. But it was Ok for a 17 year old high school graduate to take the ferry into the city everyday and work as a secretary on Wall St. Lucky for him he didn’t live to see Mad Men.
Just another internet kook. They’re a dime a dozen. At this point I don’t see what the point is in getting upset about them. If you can think of a preposterous opinion, you can bet that there’s a website somewhere seriously expounding it.
I bet these “Fix the Family” people are Latin Massers. They claim to be faithful to Church teaching, but some of the stuff on their web site sound a little bit too much like the SSPX* nonsense.
“Society of St. Pius X,” or something like that. Google them if you’re curious.
I can’t find the study, but I swear I’ve seen one that indicates happily married couples routinely perceive their partners as better than they actually are, overestimating their abilities and virtues. I dunno if hormones have anything to do with it though. Personally I believe it, because I am happily married and I don’t think it’s possible for me to think any more highly of my husband than I already do.
Incidentally, googling ‘‘marriage study’’ with various permutations of the above subject yields a high quantity of Bible quotes and Christian counseling websites.

Seriously. Jesuits, anyone?
I went to Catholic schools K-12 and we had bitchin’ science classes. I clearly remember being in 1st grade and the teacher explaining that God didn’t really create the world in 7 days, but that since God has always existed, millions or even BILLIONS of years would feel as short as a single day does to us. Evolution and the scientific method were extensively covered. Hell, in high school religion classes, we were explicitly encouraged to question and doubt - how genuine and strong can your faith really be if you never actually examine it? When someone asked what about if you end up not believing in anything after questioning, the teacher said that God would miss you but be proud and hope you decide to return, but would never stop loving you. I think that’s pretty impressive for a religious school.
Yes, my husband was educated by the Dominicans, and he reports a very similar experience.
I had mostly the Sisters of Joseph for some of Elementary and all of High School. We did evolution, geology, etc. Religion never made it into any class besides theology. And in our theology classes we discussed other religions like Buddhism and stuff. As I mentioned before, we also covered sex ed including birth control, condom use, etc (it, like many of my classes, was taught by a layperson). The only thing that never came up was abortion. It just wasn’t discussed at all as far as I can remember. The only thing the school ever got preachy about, to the best of my recollection, was war and the death penalty (it was against both, don’t feel like I should need to say that, but…).
If you do send your daughter to college, for Og’s sake don’t let her major in Cowboy Studies!
Does she believe it, or is she lying to them deliberately?
Dominicans once headed up the Inquisition. They had such a nasty reputation that they were known jocularly as the Domini cani (dogs of God). Perhaps they’ve changed.
And God said “Thou shalt not attend college for it is full of debauchery and sin.” And Catholic parents rejoiced knowing their daughters will forever be stuck working crappy jobs like retail sales or stripping.
