Hey, I have an idea for Comments on Cecil's Columns

I was thinking, since so many newbie come around and want to make comments on a column or mailbag item, they probably just press the Comment on this Column link and have to find their way from their.

Would it be possible and/or desirable for the moderators and/or administrators to set up an “official thread” on each item? That way, the Comment link could point directly to the thread, which would be introduced by a mod and already have those elusive links put right in.

It just seems common that someone, understandably with no clue, will start a (possibly redundant) thread on a column, not know anything about UBB code or the ettiquette of the SDMB…

Hey, that’s a good idea. It would take a few minutes for each item, but shouldn’t be too much work. Some code-heads could probably even automate the process.

I always feel bad for those that may be serious commenters that come up against an accidental breach of ettiquette. Anything we can do to help them would be great.

My very first post was a comment on a Cecil column, and like most newbies I neglected to include a link. And look how perfect I am now!

Seriously, though, I just wanted to bring this one to the top since I’m hoping a moderator will post on this one.

Hopefully, I can convince you to accept “hopefully” as a disjunct adverb.
Frankly, I would be lying if I said I were confident.
Perhaps this subject is simply too complex for me to explain.
Unfortunately, I would be lucky to explain my way out of a paper bag.

It’s not uncommon for a column, or a mailbag item, to generate more than one comment thread where the OPs address different aspects of the response in question. I’m inclined to think it best to let the OPs continue to phrase their OP, and thus set the course of the thread, themselves.

I gotta agree with beatle here; we don’t want to be that rigid, either.

People generally figure things out very fast. Y’all underestimate your fellow Teeming Millions.

Uhh, okay. Doesn’t seem that rigid to me. I’m not saying people shouldn’t be able to set up their own Comments threads, just that one should be set up and linked automatically.
