Gee, I thought I was already able to delete files and such from my system… Using DOS, Windows 1.03, Windows 2, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000…
Seriously, couldn’t they find one reporter familiar enough with PCs to not write something so stupid? In the first sentence of the article? It’s not like only engineers with graduate degrees use PCs anymore.
I beleve what they are talking about is COMPLETLY removing the data from the hard drive as opposed to how it’s done now, I.E. removing the file header but leaving the data on the drive until it’s covered by other data.
There is a thread somewhere around here discussing how the Government is taking a dim view on this, as its implimentation can help computer criminals completly eliminate incriminating evidence from their drives.
Ah, that makes sense. Of course, this type of overwriting-deletion has been available in utilities (like Norton Utilities) since forever. But, I bet they still catch a lot of people by looking at non-securely deleted files on disks.
