It’s very, very wrong of me, no doubt, but I get a delightful tingle of schadenfreude every time the Mittster, desperately sucking up to the worst fanatics of the Religious Right, gets dismissed by them because he’s gasp a heathen Mormon.

No joy for you tonight, then:

Mitt Romney won the most support for the Republican presidential nomination in a straw poll of GOP activists attending an annual conference.

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor whose moderate stances on social issues irks the party‘s right wing, was second with 17 percent.

Sen. John McC, , ), R-Ariz., who rounds out the top tier of serious GOP contenders, skipped the event — and was punished for it. He got only 12 percent of the vote.

I would be amused to see the GOP nominate Romney. “Look, we’re diverse! This time, the white male candidate who sucks up to the religious right is a Mormon!!! From New Eng–I mean, the Midwest! Don’t vote for that woman/black/latino, they probably have cooties!”

Meanwhile, the swing voters wonder why they didn’t nominate McCain this time, either.
