I do. Absolutely. They are cut from the same ignorance based cloth. Well…maybe not flat earthers. But anti-nuke and anti-vax? Yup. Same thing to me. As well as climate change deniers and wack-a-do anti-GMO types.
Flat earthers do have an advantage, they could shove anything they don’t want right over the edge.
I dunno about flat-earthers, but anti-nuke crazies and anti-vaxxers both have spent decades publicizing and advocating for bad science which is a direct threat to the health and safety of the human race. I think it’s reasonable to compare the two.
If it’s so safe, then we can just leave it where it is. I’m glad you agree.
I have a friend who worked at the Test Site. 2 years ago now, he had to have his hands and feet amputated. His immune system doesn’t work at all. He’s already got one settlement from the federal government and has 2 more pending lawsuits.
If it’s so safe, leave it where it is or find someone who wants it: we don’t.
It’s safe if you manage it properly. Managing it properly means putting it someplace like Yucca Mountain.
The Test Site has been used and active for decades, so you have layers of what was, is and will be considered ‘safe’ going forward. I sympathize with your friend, but this stuff happens in the real world. There are all sorts of things that can cause cancer, or cause amputation. Even at the Test Site, it doesn’t necessarily mean it was radiation…it could be a lot of the toxic chemicals they used in the past. Cold comfort for your friend, but the problem isn’t storing nuclear waste…which, again, isn’t what your article was about to start this thread.
As for leaving it where it is, that’s often a bad choice. It’s better to have a central repository for stuff so it can be better handled, safeguarded and protected. Certainly high grade weapons material needs to be centralized for security reasons alone, not just left willy-nilly at a bunch of different locations.
Great: go find someplace like Yucca Mountain; we don’t want it at Yucca Mountain.
That’s cool. Give us back the billions spent then and we can move on. Be sure to make the Nevada check payable to the US Government. Let me know when you have that lined up…
Like where?
But *we *do.
Are you sure you posted this in the right thread? Nevada owes the federal government nothing for the money the federal government wasted: that was their call, no one forced them to spend that money.
BTW, why is everyone overlooking the fact that the federal government lied in court and then did what they weren’t supposed to do?
THAT is why there is such distrust in the west: we can actually list and show all the times we were lied to. The Bundy clan et. al. didn’t just happen in a vacuum eh.
Anyplace you’d like to propose? Why would a place “like Yucca Mountain” be better than Yucca Mountain (which has already had vast amounts of the necessary research and infrastructure prepared), other than it’s near where YOU live? This is totally NIMBYism. You’re fine with it being stored somewhere where it will affect other people as long as it doesn’t affect you. And stop saying “we”, unless you’re the Queen of England. You’re speaking for yourself. I live in the western US and you are not speaking for my views.
But we don’t and we’re right here. If it’s so safe, find someone who wants it. It was pretty fucking stupid to make something we couldn’t deal with, IMO and Nevadans don’t feel the need to be your garbage dump. If it’s so safe, find someone who wants it; we don’t.
As XT mentions, more AGW deniers, but anti-vaxx works too. Anti-vaxxers have the same inability to recognize the difference between small dangers and larger ones. AGW deniers and anti-nukes don’t understand the concept of “scientific consensus”.
And my best friend’s cousin used to know a guy whose son developed autism within a year after being vaccinated for measles.

Shodan
Hey, go fuck yourself; we don’t want the waste.
I don’t have to propose anything: we don’t want the waste. Of course I’m fine with it being stored somewhere else where it will affect other people as long as it doesn’t affect me: so are you and everyone else who’s trying to force it on Nevada; did you really think that an accusation of NIMBYism would hold up when NIMBY is what is causing people to want to force it on Nevada?? :dubious:
If a cause is a good one, it wouldn’t be necessary for supporters to lie and then ignore court orders and legal proceedings. But since it promotes your cause, I’m guessing everyone who’s commented so far but hasn’t denounced the federal government’s actions that prompted the OP actually supports the “get it to Nevada any way we can” sentiment.
If that’s the case: fuck you too.
Is Yucca Mountain Federal property? If so, fuck off, Nevada. What you want doesn’t mean shit. If it’s state property, go wild.
Sounds like Nevadans should consider secession. I nominate you to be the leader of the movement…with your brains and charisma it’s a fait accompli. See how many people you’ve won over here already.
We own the land.
Why do you refuse to say where it should go instead? Spoiler: We already know.
QFT+1 E knows refusing to answer questions.
I don’t refuse to say: i just already said it: leave it where it is. Stop making more. People shouldn’t have made it if they didn’t know what to do with it.
I am still just in awe of the fact that all other posters seem to be just fine with the federal government lying and defying the courts.
