McCain: Maybe We Don’t Need Yucca
I knew politics was soul-destroying, but I had no idea it was quite bad enough to turn someone tough enough to survive years in the Hanoi Hilton into a spineless worm.
McCain: Maybe We Don’t Need Yucca

An international repository? It’s expensive enough as it to transport nuclear waste; does this mean they want to put it in another country? That ought to help with the security portion of the cost! Or just somewhere else in the US? It’s got to go somewhere, and nuclear power (and the waste it produces) is a current viable solution to lower greenhouse gas production and increase energy independence. If it’s not at Yucca Mountain it’s got to go somewhere else. Where is somewhere else? If there was a better alternative, we’d be talking about that site, instead.
This is one the few Obama’s views I disagree with. Knowing that McCain is now either harboring the same view, or lying about it, makes the dichotomy between the two smaller, while paradoxically making the choice for Obama much easier.
Perhaps McCain’s League of Democracies could establish a huge nuclear waste dump on the far side of the Moon.
They could call it Moonbase Alpha.
!!! I hope you weren’t too attached to having tides!
Well, it shouldn’t be too surprising that the NIMBYism endemic to internal American politics can also manifest itself on a national level. If you tell people that their waste or other unpleasant byproducts of their lifestyle can be foisted off on someone else, it’ll win you votes just about every time. It doesn’t just happen with nuclear power either; the debate over the Cape Wind project in Massachusetts shows that there are quite a few liberal environmentalists who think that wind power is a great idea, as long as the windmills are in someone else’s back yard.
On the issue of McCain, i really wonder how much more weaseling and standard political pandering he can do and still be touted as an “honest maverick” in Washington. I never really understood where the idea came from that he was somehow more genuine and straightforward and honest than the average politician, but anyone who still believes it after the past year or so is clearly delusional.
A comic strip from today, which hits the topic squarely on the head.
Oh God.
The minute I opened this thread, my iTunes rotated to…
How did they teach you to be just a happy puppet dancing on a string?
How did you learn everything that comes along with slavish funnery?
Tell me something, if the world is so insane, is it making you sane again to
let another man tug at the thread that pulls up your nodding head?
I…I…can’t think of what I was going to say anymore. I’m too busy laughing.
I swear. Can a Rebublican or Democrat have any honesty? What the hell McCain? Show some balls. You have to put this somewhere.
God I hate politicians.
Hmmm. Well, St. Louis has excellent access by river, road and rail. Nobody important lives there…
Yes, it makes much more sense to place nuclear waste near two major rivers. Where the fuck are we going to put it. Seems like a desert is the best option. Is it the best option? I don’t know.
Come on man.
Are you just arguing because you can? Seriously, where else is an option at this point? We are talking fifteen years here and billions of dollars.
I vote New Jersey. We could probably just slip it by them. They’d never even notice!
Whoosh.
Check out your own location field, Sparky.
Laughing…like a Maniac?
If we’re serious about security. we’ll just bury it along the border. Who’s gonna cross land the glows green?
Hey, that gives me an idea… Iraq already has a green zone…
Whoosh back at you. What are you talking about?
Best idea I’ve heard all day.
He was teasing you (and pointing out that NIMBYism is endemic).
Sadly, plenty of people who would then be treated to free health care in our hospitals. Not to mention the sudden epidemic of Mutant Wetbacks.
Those things are dangerous, especially the Teenage Ninja version!
:::: goes to look up the names of Mexican artists :::::
This Nevadan thinks the desert is where a repository should be put. Should we put it in Wyoming or Montana ? There is a fair amount of life in the desert but speaking as someone who spent his youth hiking and camping in it, I think I would rather save the plains and prairies.
You can barely grow weeds here. I have dug out my front flower garden 4 or 5 times since I’ve lived in this house and every year, no matter how much soil and compost and fertilizer I fill it in with, the desert wind blows it away. I have been 50 miles from any road in pristine desert and still one footprint will crush the crust and the erosion will begin.
Why waste the more beautiful lands of our nation on waste storage? I’m sure some happy ass politico will be along to tell me shortly.
